Why Adani Group’s $100-billion loss hasn’t tanked Indian markets Indian equities as a whole enjoyed a calm week in Mumbai, the country’s financial center, and have held largely steady since the Adani collapse NEW YORK TIMES FEBRUARY 12, 2023 / 06:40 AM IST moneycontrol news

The key support level for the Nifty is seen at 17,668, followed by 17,630, and 17,570.

When shares of the Adani Group, until recently India’s largest conglomerate, began their free fall late last month, shedding more than $100 billion in days, some observers worried that the collapse could bring down the country’s capital markets, and with them the Indian economy.

That would be a frightening prospect not just for India but for the world. The country’s economy recently passed Britain’s to become the world’s fifth largest, and it is the only big one — China’s included — that has clocked strong and steady growth since pandemic restrictions were relaxed.

But the fears of a broader market contagion have not come to pass. Indian equities as a whole enjoyed a calm week in Mumbai, the country’s financial center, and have held largely steady since the Adani collapse. India’s main market index is nearly 2.5% above where it stood a year ago, even as U.S. stocks have fallen by more than 4% during the same period.

The steadfastness attests to the size and seeming strength of the broader Indian business landscape. Adani fell spectacularly after it was accused of fraud and stock manipulation by a small New York trading firm, but the debacle is barely a splash from the big Indian bucket.

India is home to about 1.5 million companies and a well-capitalized stock market: Its National Stock Exchange fluctuated comfortably between $3 trillion and $3.5 trillion last year.

The market resilience has reinforced a reality that the rest of Indian business would surely like to see highlighted more directly: that the Adani Group, a family-run infrastructure- and energy-based conglomerate, in some ways stood alone.

The flaws identified by Adani’s critics — opaque structures, complicated by cross shareholding, maybe even puffery in the bookkeeping — can be found in other Indian companies, if on a much smaller scale. But many of India’s actually profitable firms are relative models of probity, observers say, even in the go-go context of the Indian market.

Several rank on a list kept by Refinitiv, an international market data provider, of the world’s best-governed companies, including Infosys and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.

While calling the Adani Group “the largest con in financial history,” Hindenburg Research, the New York investment firm, itself sounded a bullish note on India proper, calling it “an emerging superpower with an exciting future.”

More immediately, the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, signaled Wednesday that it would be getting on with business as usual, raising interest rates by a quarter-point and leaving open the possibility of further increases. That put it in harmony with its big Western counterparts, which are likewise making a priority of tamping down inflation.

The initial concern, as the fallout from Hindenburg’s accusations forced the Adani Group to cancel a major share offering on Feb. 1, was that the plague of doubt would spread throughout India’s capital markets. Would Indian or foreign investors dump India’s stocks and bonds at random, suddenly frightened that their value might plummet, too?

The reputation of the Indian regulatory system has taken a knock, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced questions about his close ties to the Adani Group’s founder, Gautam Adani. But other companies’ shares, whether in infrastructure or in unrelated areas, are holding up. The quiet side of Indian capitalism intends to keep on spinning money, wherever the pieces of the Adani empire may fall.

In the years since Modi took power, Adani had loudly cast his company as in service of the Indian government, and when his conglomerate came under attack by Hindenburg, it mounted a nationalistic defense, accusing its naysayers of causing “anguish for Indian citizens.”

The conjoined nature of the Modi and Adani organizations, however, is not typical of Indian capitalism in the 21st century. Saurabh Mukherjea, founder of Marcellus Investment Managers in Mumbai, said that in the past decade, $1.5 trillion in value had been added to India’s public markets, 80% of it from just 20 companies.

Some of those, like Adani, make a lot of noise, flaunting their heft and political connections. But 90% are “clean, well-run franchises,” Mukherjea said. The leaders of “the biggest, most consistent money-compounding machines keep their mouths shut and their heads beneath the parapet.”

The Indian public tends to be unfamiliar with, for instance, the CEOs of firms like HDFC Bank or Asian Paints, who are rarely seen embracing politicians.

In private, some of the country’s business leaders feel satisfied to see Adani getting the comeuppance they think he deserves. Not just for personal reasons — they think it will be good for corporate governance. India’s Supreme Court, too, indicated that it saw room for improvement, ordering the government on Friday to answer questions on the matter.

In public, though, few will say much about Adani. His friends are still powerful, even if he is diminished.

Sanjay Reddy, the head of GVK, a rival infrastructure conglomerate that lost its most profitable airports to the Adani Group after a raid by federal agents, took to the airwaves to deny a politician’s claim that the government had “hijacked” the airports for Adani. (He made his remarks to NDTV, a news channel that had been frequently critical of the Modi government before Adani bought it last year.)

It is too soon to say how far the Adani Group will fall, or how it will land. The calamitous plunge in the stock price of a conglomerate once valued at $220 billion paused early this week, at roughly halfway down to zero, as bargain hunters picked up shares at fire-sale prices.

But Adani shares resumed their decline later in the week; MSCI World, an influential index, decided Friday to reduce some of the stocks’ weighting, which in turn pushed investors to sell off the shares.

Nathan Anderson, Hindenburg’s founder, tweeted that the firm’s own work had been “validated” by the MCSI decision. In the weeks since Hindenburg accused Adani of financial misdeeds, some banks had refused to take Adani shares as collateral, and Moody’s on Friday lowered its outlook on six Adani bonds to a status that left them barely investment grade.

Others have defended Adani, cautiously. The signals are still mixed: Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, for instance, dumped its holdings in three Adani stocks at the same time that Goldman Sachs was rating Adani Ports, a subsidiary, as a “buy.”

Aswath Damodaran, a finance professor at New York University, wrote that even if the worst that has been said about Adani turns out to be true, it has not perpetrated “a con game.” By taking on huge amounts of debt to fuel its growth, Damodaran wrote, Adani had taken “a risk, perhaps a poorly thought through one,” though one not unusual in the infrastructure business, especially in a place like India, where investors may expect strong growth for years to come.

One fear that materialized as the Adani Group began its descent was that its troubles could ripple through its lenders to afflict other borrowers. But as its books are scrutinized, it has become clear that its debt is concentrated among lenders backed by the Indian state, mainly the Life Insurance Corp. of India and the State Bank of India, and by foreign banks.

Neither poses much risk of pain among India’s ordinary citizens, but if the life insurer were to incur billions in losses, it would impose a burden on the country’s fiscal deficit.

Still, there is a danger that Adani may have secret sources of leverage. If it were discovered to have hidden loans through some of the shell companies that Hindenburg has examined, that could help explain why it sought to drive its valuation to astronomical proportions.

If Adani fell into bankruptcy — it is not clear how likely a threat that is — its big plans for building Modi’s infrastructure-and-solar-panels vision would go awry. Even then, its main assets, like ports and power lines, would retain value if they were to be taken over by creditors.

The jury may still be out on Adani, but the very name has become a third rail in India’s politics. In a couple of rowdy annual sessions of Parliament, the opposition made a loud chant of “Modi-Adani, bhai-bhai” or “Modi-Adani, like brothers.”

The prime minister gave back as good as he got, at one point insulting an opponent’s family name — but never once uttered the name Adani.

India, US to jointly develop UAVs and share IP rights :-ET

India and the US have moved ahead to jointly develop air launched unmanned aerial vehicles that will be used for surveillance missions, with first flight of the prototype likely to take place by the end of this year.

The Air Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (ALUAV) program is taking place under the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) and a critical factor is that the intellectual property (IP) rights for the new system will be jointly shared by the two sides.

Canada adds 150,000 jobs as PM Trudeau widens gates for new immigrants ;-ET

Canadian employment grew much faster than expected, raising questions as to whether the Bank of Canada is really done raising interest rates.

The economy added 150,000 jobs in January — 10 times the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey — while the unemployment rate held steady at 5%, near a record low, Statistics Canada reported Friday in Ottawa.

It was the fifth straight month of increases for a labor market that continues to defy all predictions of a coming slowdown, catching economists on the wrong foot. If anything, the demand for workers appears to be accelerating, buoyed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s policy of opening the gates wider to new immigrants, international students and temporary workers from abroad. In December, economists were forecasting a small gain of 5,000 jobs; employers added almost 70,000.
The economy has created 326,000 jobs since September, pushing the number of employed Canadians to more than 20 million for the first time. “The labor market is sending precisely zero signs of economic stress,” Bank of Montreal Chief Economist Doug Porter said in a report to investors.

Bonds tumbled on the strong print. The benchmark two-year yield soared as high as 4.13% — a three-month high — while the loonie rallied to C$1.3362 per US dollar at 9:56 a.m. Ottawa time.

Friday’s numbers suggest Canada’s tight labor market is still running at an unsustainably hot pace. The December figure, along with other stronger-than-expected data, prompted a potentially final interest-rate hike by the central bank last month before policymakers declared a pause while they assess the state of the economy.

Governor Tiff Macklem, who raised the overnight lending rate by 425 basis points to 4.5% in less than a year, has said he expects the lagged effects of higher rates to drag economic growth to close to zero in the first three quarters of 2023. At its last meeting, the central bank said it now plans to hold, but could hike further if enough evidence of a hotter-than-expected economy accumulates.

“While Canadian central bankers emphasized they would need an ‘accumulation of evidence’ that the economy was not following the path laid out in their projections, today’s data is a big piece of evidence that it is not,” Royce Mendes, head of macro strategy at Desjardins Securities, said in a report to investors.

Strong jobs data increase the chances the Bank of Canada will be forced from the sidelines to deliver another quarter-percentage-point increase. Traders in swaps markets put the odds of another 25-basis-point hike at around three quarters by summer, from less than half before the release. Rate cuts are no longer expected this year.

“We have to imagine that this sort of data surprise clears the ‘high bar’ needed for additional tightening, but we still doubt the BoC will have enough evidence in hand to move rates in March,” Toronto-Dominion Bank strategist Andrew Kelvin and Robert Both said in a report to investors. “So we look to April, which at this point is definitely a live meeting, and we see max risk of rate hikes for June.”

Canada is enjoying rapid population growth because of immigration, and the survey data show that non-permanent residents — including students and temporary workers — are seeing outsized job gains. The labor force participation rate increased 0.3 percentage points to 65.7%, as the labor force grew by 153,000, or 0.7%.

The country followed the US in the unexpected surge in employment, defying recession forecasts in both economies. US nonfarm payrolls jumped 517,000 last month while the unemployment rate dropped to 3.4%, the lowest since May 1969, and average hourly earnings grew at steady clip.

In Canada, average hourly wages rose 4.5% in January, down from 4.8% in December, after months of persistent growth of more than 5%. Earlier this week, Macklem said wage growth running in the range of 4% and 5% isn’t consistent with getting inflation back to the 2% target unless productivity growth is surprisingly strong.

The blowout gains in January pushed the employment rate — the percentage of people aged 15 and older who are employed — to 62.5%, a level last observed in April and May 2019. Employment growth last month was driven by women and men in their prime working years, and in both private and public sectors.

In January, total hours worked rose 0.8% on a monthly basis, the fastest pace since May, and up 5.6% compared to a year earlier.Employment increased in five provinces, including Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, and was up in six industries, led by wholesale and retail trade.

'PM Modi can convince Putin', says US on how Russia-Ukraine war can end . Updated: 11 Feb 2023, 12:05 PM IST Livemint

The prolonged Russia-Ukraine war has severely impacted the global economy in the past one year. While many world leaders, as well as United Nations, have tried to convince Russia to end the war and retreat its army from Ukraine, all efforts have gone into vain. The war has deteriorated the existing bitter ties between the West and Russia, however, India has taken a neutral stand.

Against this backdrop, the US White House's spokesperson has come out with a suggestion on how the Russia-Ukraine war will end.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that the US would welcome any effort that could lead to ending hostilities in Ukraine.

When asked if there is still time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the war or convince President Vladimir Putin, Kirby said, "I think there's still time for Putin to stop the war. I think there's still time for it. I will let PM (PM Modi) speak to whatever efforts he's willing to undertake. The US would welcome any effort that could lead to an end of hostilities in Ukraine".

During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's summit, PM Modi said that this is not the era for war during his interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Today's era is not of war and I have spoken to you about it on the call. Today we will get the opportunity to talk about how we can progress on the path of peace".

PM Modi spoke about this during a bilateral meeting in Uzbekistan's Samarkand.

The White House spokesperson blamed Putin for the Russia-Ukraine war. "The single person responsible for what the Ukrainian people are going through is Vladimir Putin and he could stop it right now," Kirby said.

"Instead, he's firing cruise missiles into energy and power infrastructure and trying to knock out the lights and knock out the heat so the Ukrainian people suffer even more than they already have," he added.

Kirby also highlighted US President Joe Biden's efforts to end the devastating war between Russia and Ukraine.

"So President Biden has said these gosh dozens of times. We think this war could end today, should end today," he said.

Biden will be travelling to Poland on 20 February to mark the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Biden will meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Eastern European allies and speak about Ukraine, the White House said. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022.

Trading firms are making fortune by delivering Russian oil to India . Updated: 11 Feb 2023, 08:49 AM IST Bloomberg :-mint

There are fortunes to be made delivering Russian crude oil to India.

Price assessments by Platts, a unit of S&P Global, show a margin of more than $20 between a barrel of Russia’s Urals crude lifted in the Baltic region and the same oil delivered to the west coast of India. On a flow that’s now running at about 1.5 million barrels a day, that works out at $1 billion a month.

The European Union banned imports of Russian crude in December, putting the country at the mercy of two big buyers: China and India. Numerous new trading firms with ties to Moscow emerged — especially in Dubai — before the measure, along with a price cap on Russian oil, was imposed.

Urals cargoes in the Baltic are trading about $40 a barrel below Dated Brent, an important benchmark for physical oil trades, while cargoes delivered on the west coast of India have been discounted by a much smaller $20 a barrel on average since mid-January.Some of the difference will go to pay for the tankers that make the two-month round trip. The export price is also more immediate than the delivered one. In theory, though, the gap implies big trading profits.

WHY THIS "REMOVE MODI CAMPAIGN" BY ANTI INDIA EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL VESTED INTERESTS ?

Why🤔🥺 the external and internal *vested interests want to remove Modi?* 🥺🤯

*Mossadegh....and....Modi* 💪💯👏🙏

*Iran of 1951 and India of now!*👍 *The similarities?* 🤔👆 Since Iran exports a huge amount of oil to India, whenever the Iran-US conflict escalates, it affects India as well, so our media shows a lot of news about it. Have you ever wondered " *Why Iranians call America "The Devil's Land"?"* The British already dominated Iran's oil trade, with 84% of Iran's oil production going to England and only 16% to Iran. The Emperor of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was a corrupt man, so he didn't care. (Iran had a constitutional monarchy, constitutional monarchy also has elections, parliament.) In 1951, Mohammed Mossadegh, *a staunch patriot,💪💪 became Prime Minister.👏👏 He did not like the dominance of foreign companies* 👍🔥in Iran's oil trade. On March 15, 1951, he presented a bill for the nationalization of Iran's oil industry💥🙋 in the parliament, which was passed by a majority. After this bill was passed, Iranians began to dream of happiness, that now their poverty would be removed. Times magazine called Mossadegh "Man of the year" in 1951. But due to all these things the British lost a lot. The British started many small and big attempts to remove Mossadegh, tried to bribe Mossadegh, tried to assassinate Mossadegh, attempted a military coup, but because Mossadegh was very experienced and intelligent, the British assassination, bribery plot failed and Mossadegh was very popular among the Iranian people. Being popular, a military coup was not possible.

Finally the British asked for help from America. America's CIA approved a $1 million fund to remove Mossadegh. 1 million dollars equals 4250 crore Rials (Iranian currency)

The funds were sent to the American ambassador in Tehran (the capital of Iran). Mossadegh wanted to completely end the monarchy in Iran and give all the power to the parliament, so the emperor of Iran was also on the side of England and America. Their plan was to create discontent against Mossadegh and remove popular support from him, then overthrow his government with the help of corrupt parliamentarians.

A large number of Iranian journalists, editors, Muslim clerics were paid 631 crore Riyals by the US and those journalists, editors and Muslim clerics had only one thing to do in return, which was to incite the people against Mossadegh. Members of the Iranian Parliament were paid 46 million Rials each to spread propaganda about Mossadegh's work. Thousands of Iranians were paid to participate in the false protest. They started marching on the Parliament. Big media around the world also started supporting America. Mossadegh began to be referred to as "the Dictator" in the "New York Times". "Times" magazine called Mossadegh's choice dangerous. Opposition to Mossadegh began at a very low level, with cartoons depicting him as gay.

Realizing that his government was about to be overthrown by corrupt MPs, Mossadegh dissolved the parliament, and finally the US forced the Iranian emperor to remove Mossadegh from his post as prime minister. (Since Mossadegh had the authority to accept or reject the order, he decided to arrest him if he refused the order)
But Mossadegh's soldiers arrested the army unit that had come to arrest him, and upon learning this, the Emperor of Iran fled to Baghdad.

Finally, by paying a bribe of 210 million Rials, the US instigated fake riots in the capital of Iran, with mercenaries on both sides.
Rioters attack Mossadegh's house, Mossadegh is forced to flee, military overthrows power, a puppet becomes prime minister citing the old order of the emperor.

After the emperor returned to Iran, Mossadegh surrendered, was put on trial, imprisoned, and then held under house arrest until his death. (Mossadegh died in custody at the age of 85.)

After that America and England shared 40% - 40% of Iranian oil and the remaining 20% was given to other European companies.

For decades the Iranian people had to live under the dictatorship of the Shah, a revolution ended the monarchy but then the fanatical Khomeini came to power and made the Iranian people even worse.

What was Mossadegh's crime..? "Sectors of our country should be dominated by indigenous companies instead of foreign companies!" This policy is his crime..? Under Mossadegh's leadership, Iran would have become a fully democratic country before 1955, and 100% of the oil production would have benefited Iran. The decades of torture inflicted on the Iranian people would not have happened.

With a strong democracy and a government that favors indigenous companies, Iran would probably be a more prosperous country than Saudi Arabia today. But Iran's corrupt parliamentarians, journalists, editors, protestors sold Iran's rich future for just one million dollars.

During this period of oppression, the Iranian people began to realize that America had a hand in overthrowing Mossadegh's government. In 1979, the Iranians detained Americans in the US embassy for 444 days, and 77 volumes of documents the Iranians found in the embassy were released. In which there was evidence of how America helped the oppressive puppets in Iran.

That's why Iranians call America, *"Satan's Country"*.

Mossadegh could not complete the policy of breaking the dominance of foreign companies and promoting indigenous companies, he had accepted enmity with the two superpowers of the world. In the end he had an unfortunate end, as in Bollywood films the hero doesn't win every time.

Finally who is the real villain for Iran..? Journalists, editors, MPs, activists who have been sold to America? If these people had not been sold, the people would have stood behind Mossadegh, America would not have succeeded like England. But for four paise, the patriotic leader was called "Kumshah" and soon the whole country was ruined.

*Our country 'India' is also on the same path today.*👏👏💪 It is a great misfortune😱😢 that the *common citizens do not notice the ongoing conspiracies,*😱🥺 unless they suffer endless atrocities. It is *wise 🧘🙇to be alert in time and not fall prey to this very corrupt media*💔 propaganda, trust our patriotic present Indian leadership and stand firmly behind it.

*Otherwise a disaster like Iran is inevitable..* 😱😤..and this is why intelligence agencies of big capitalist countries are working day and night. These intelligence *agencies are making many prominent and influential persons of India work as their agents*😡🤬 and they are also working with the aim of selling the country for dirty money. It is no longer a secret *that many opposition parties have been leading* 😤💔on this since 2014.

It is said that *our destiny is in our own hands* 🙋🙇, *we just need to understand it properly.* 👍

Lithium deposits found in J&K: Is India's EV drive now set to take the fast lane?

India's Mines Ministry on Thursday announced that 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves have been found for the first time in the country in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Geological Survey of India for the first time established Lithium inferred resources (G3) of 5.9 million tonnes in the Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir," the Ministry of Mines said on Thursday.

It further said that 51 mineral blocks including Lithium and Gold were handed over to respective state governments. Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and is one of the key components in EV batteries.

"Out of these 51 mineral blocks, 5 blocks pertain to gold and other blocks pertain to commodities like potash, molybdenum, base metals etc. spread across 11 states of Jammu and Kashmir (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana," the ministry added.

The blocks were prepared based on the work carried out by GSI from field seasons 2018-19 to till date.

Lithium, the catalyst to EV boom?

Lithium-ion battery costs rose last year for the first time in the EV era, according to BloombergNEF. Elon Musk bemoaned lithium’s “insane” rally and said high raw material costs were among Tesla Inc.’s biggest headwinds.

The central government has unveiled incentives of at least $3.4 billion to expedite its lagging adoption of EVs as Prime Minister Narendra Modi vows to reach net zero by 2070. The idea is that that manufacturing the costliest component — batteries — locally will make the end product more affordable for the mass market and set the country up as a potential exporter, tapping into surging global demand.

The initiatives have piqued the interest of billionaires like Mukesh Ambani, whose Reliance Industries Ltd. is building an EV battery facility as part of a broader $76 billion push into clean energy. Ambani’s is among three companies, including scooter-maker Ola Electric Mobility Pvt. and bullion refiner Rajesh Exports Ltd. set to receive incentives under a $2.3 billion program to support advanced battery cell development.

The world’s second most populous country has only a fraction of the raw materials needed to satisfy domestic demand for lithium-ion batteries — forecast by Crisil to grow 100-fold by 2030 — let alone produce on a global scale.

As the world moves away from gasoline-fueled combustion engines, demand for lithium, nickel, cobalt and other metals that go into lithium-ion batteries is soaring.

“The entry barriers are quite high,” said Jasmeet Singh Kalsi, director of Manikaran Power Ltd. to news agency Bloomberg. The company is setting up India’s first lithium refinery and scouting for nickel, cobalt and copper assets overseas. “China has captured most of it.”

India has a long way to go to catch up, and also faces competition from other countries, including the US, which is pushing to grow domestic battery production in an effort to break China’s hold on the market.

What life is like in Pakistan where diesel costs 262 rupees a litre :-ET Feb 11,2023

As Pakistan lurches from one crisis to another, citizens are taking to the streets to protest a dual economic and political meltdown with little precedent in the nation’s post-independence history.

For months, the world’s fifth most populous country has edged closer to a debt default, echoing the cautionary tales of other developing economies, including Sri Lanka and Venezuela. Inflation is at a 48-year high. Foreign currency reserves cover less than a month of imports. The bill for billions in damage from last year’s devastating floods continues to sting, highlighting the financial consequences of a warming planet.

Talks for bailout money from the International Monetary Fund failed to yield a deal this week and will continue, providing no immediate reprieve. However, the amount on the table — part of a $6.5 billion loan program — is still far from enough to replenish Pakistan’s depleted coffers.

Fighting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government and Imran Khan, the ousted former leader, has cleaved the country. National elections expected in the second half of 2023 could turn messy. And a recent suicide bombing in the city of Peshawar killed more than 100 people, illustrating the risks of Islamabad’s continued links to the Taliban, who’ve tightened their control in neighboring Afghanistan.

To understand the crisis, Bloomberg News spoke to Pakistanis across the country. Here are their stories:

In Karachi, a bustling port city, surging inflation has battered local businesses. Muhammad Rashid, the owner of Rashid Seafood, said sales at his restaurant are down 50% this winter.

Middle class customers, in particular, are staying away — bringing into focus sharpening inequality as the prices of staples such as bread and meat jump.

“Now, our customer base is mostly from the business class,” Rashid said. “The rich are having no problem and continue to come here and eat seafood.”

Irfan Ali, gas station manager
Diesel is another sore spot in Pakistan. The government raised prices last month to over 262 rupees per liter, leading many to cut back on commuting.

The lanes are emptier at Total Parco Pakistan Ltd., a gas station in a busy part of Karachi. Irfan Ali, the manager, said he used to sell 15,000 liters a day when petrol went for 200 rupees a liter. Now, with the fuel at almost 250 rupees a liter that number is down to 13,000. He said competition for business is fierce.

“We are managing from our margins, so we don’t lay off any of our staff,” Ali said. “Inflation will increase unemployment for sure.”

Farzana, housekeeper
Many ordinary Pakistanis are taking out loans to afford basic necessities.

Farzana, who works as a maid in one of Karachi’s poshest neighborhoods, said she’s been forced to borrow 5,000 rupees a month to keep up with a surge in the cost of living.

Her electricity and gas bills have doubled and a recent gallbladder surgery cut into the family’s savings. To meet monthly expenses, Farzana’s 16-year-old son took a job at a restaurant and stopped attending school.

“Life has become very tough, but what can one do?” Farzana said. “I have even sold all my jewelry to manage our house expenses.”

Mohammad Rashid, farmer
In rural parts of the country, farmers have weathered especially heavy losses, as high fuel and electricity costs cut into their profits.

Mohammad Rashid, who grows wheat, sugarcane, pulses and cattle fodder on a small 20-acre farm in Punjab’s Khushab district, said labor costs have increased enormously over the last couple of years.

Last summer, flooding killed more than 1,300 people in another part of Pakistan, causing more than $30 billion in damage.

Officials have pushed wealthier nations to cover the bill. Pakistan is classified as the world’s eighth most vulnerable country to climate change, but it contributes just 1% to global emissions.

“We don’t have enough to spend on food,” Rashid said. “So how can we manage things like clothes, education, electricity?”

ISRO launches SSLV-D2 from Sriharikota :-ET

The ISRO Friday morning launched the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle-SSLV-D2- from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota to put three satellites EOS-07, Janus-1 & AzaadiSAT-2 satellites into a 450 km circular orbit.

The ISRO has developed SSLV with a carrying capacity of 550 kg to the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based on the market trend of going in for smaller satellites.

The SSLV-D2 will be carrying a total weight of 175.2 kg -- 156.3 kg EOS-07, 10.2 kg, Janus-1 and 8.7 kg AzaadiSAT-2 -- as its luggage.

The SSLV rocket provides low-cost access to space, offers low turn-around time and flexibility in accommodating multiple satellites, and demands minimal launch infrastructure.

It is configured with three solid propulsion stages and a velocity terminal module.

Costing about Rs 56 crore, the SSLV rocket stands 34 metre tall, two metre diameter vehicle having a lift-off mass of 120 ton, ISRO said.

As to the mission's objectives, ISRO said it is to demonstrate the designed payload capability of SSLV in LEO and injection of three satellites -- EOS-07, Janus-1 and AzaadiSAT-2 -- into the 450 km circular orbit.

As to the Friday's mission profile, about 13 minutes into its flight, the SSLV rocket will eject EOS-07 and soon after that the other two satellites Janus-1 and AzaadiSAT-2 would be ejected- all at an altitude of 450 km, said ISRO.

The SSLV's maiden flight - SSLV-D1- on 7.8.2022 was a failure as the rocket had put the two satellites -- EOS-01 and AZAADISAT -- in a wrong orbit resulting in their loss.

According to ISRO, the onboard sensors of SSLV-D1 were affected due to vibrations during the separation of its second stage. While the rocket's software was able to perform the ejection of the satellites, the ejections were done into a wrong orbit. The satellites also lacked necessary velocity to be on a stable orbit and went into oblivion.
