Chanda Kochhar moves Supreme Court challenging Bombay HC order on 'illegal' termination from ICICI Bank:-The Economic Times

 Chanda-kocchar-agencies

Former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order that refused to stay her “illegal” termination on January 30, 2019, allegedly almost four months after the bank approved her voluntary resignation on October 4, 2018.

She sought all retirement benefits and entitlements like Employee Stock Options (ESOPs), which allegedly have been “wrongfully revoked by the bank as a consequence of her illegal termination post her retirement.”

She also wants the apex court to restrain the Bank from “denying, obstructing or interfering with her exercise of the vested and unvested stock options” allotted to her under the Bank's Retirement acceptance letter of October 4, 2018.

Besides this, she has sought permission to deal with the 6,90,000 shares held by her for which she had paid full consideration.

Chanda alleged that she had not only been deprived of her retirement benefits on the basis of illegal termination but also restrained from dealing with 6,90,000 shares and the HC failed to appreciate that the ICICI Bank had no contractual or legal basis to assert a claim.

“...the HC has wrongly held that the balance of convenience is completely in favour of the bank,” the appeal stated, adding that once " rated as the most powerful women" and having been conferred "one of the highest civilian awards in the country Padma Bhushan" is suffering the wrath of grave persecution and harassment at the age of 62 years.

She had contended that the bank denied her remuneration and clawed back all the bonuses and stock options between April 2009 and March 2018, for her alleged role in granting out-of-turn loans worth Rs 3,250 crore to the Videocon Group which benefited her husband Deepak Kochhar.

A SC Bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna posted the matter for hearing after two weeks.

An ICICI Bank internal inquiry in 2019 had found that Kochhar violated disclosure norms on conflict of interest. The board said her October 2018 exit would not be treated as normal resignation but as dismissal.

Indian mining tycoon Harpal Randhawa, son killed in plane crash in Zimbabwe The plane crashed near the Murowa Diamonds mine, which is partly owned by RioZim. The Indian Express

Indian billionaire Harpal Randhawa and his son, along with four others, have been killed after their private plane crashed in southwestern Zimbabwe, PTI reported.

The plane, carrying the six including Randhawa — the owner of RioZim, a mining company producing gold and coal as well as refining nickel and copper — and his son, developed a technical fault, possibly leading to a mid-air explosion, before plunging into Peter Farm in the Zvamahande region, a Zimbabwe media website iHarare reported.

All passengers and crew onboard were reported dead in the accident last week. The single-engined Cessna 206 aircraft, owned by RioZim, was en route from Harare to the Murowa diamond mine when the accident took place on Friday. The plane crashed near the Murowa Diamonds mine, which is also partly owned by RioZim.

According to The Herald, a state-owned daily, the police said the victims included two Zimbabweans and four foreigners. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a plane crash which occurred on September 29 between 7.30 am and 8 am, where six people are confirmed dead,” police said. “The Murowa Diamond Company (RioZim)-owned white and red Zcam aircraft had left Harare for the mine at 6 am and crashed about 6 km from Mashava.”

RioZim also confirmed the crash and said it was working with the concerned authorities to gather more details on the mishap.Even as the police are yet to release the names of the deceased, journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chinono — a friend of Randhawa — confirmed his death. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Harpal Randhawa, the owner of RioZim who died today in a plane crash in Zvishavane. Five other people including his son, who was also a pilot but a passenger on this flight, also died in the crash,” Chinono wrote on X. “My thoughts are with his wife, family, friends and the RioZim community.”

The RioZim company secretary stated a full statement will be issued soon. “I am not in a position to address the media right now. We will however be issuing a statement as soon as possible,” he said.

Randhawa was the founder of GEM Holdings — the $ 4 billion private equity firm.

Fighter jets, spy planes, choppers, missiles in mega IAF list of desi projects worth over Rs 3 lakh crore :-The Economic Times Oct 2,2023

The Indian Air Force is taking up some of the biggest indigenisation projects in defence sector as the force led by Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari is working on 'Make in India' programmes worth over Rs 3.15 lakh crore.

The list of weapon systems and platforms includes the 180 Light Combat Aircraft Mark1A, 156 Light Combat Helicopters, Light Utility Choppers and many other weapon systems which are supposed to form a large chunk of the service in coming times.

The LCA Mark1A alone is supposed to be worth over Rs 1.2 lakh crore and is going to create a huge impact on developing a fighter aircraft manufacturing ecosystem in the domestic industry, senior defence officials told ANI.

The officials said the support towards building a major defence industry is key towards achieving a USD 5 trillion economy as envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Defence officials said as the 'Aatmanirbharta' programme of the defence forces takes wings, the agenda of the acquisition-related meetings is fast becoming 'Indian in the true sense.

UN authorises 2nd malaria vaccine, developed by Oxford University with help from Serum Institute of India Read more at: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com

The World Health Organisation authorised a second malaria vaccine on Monday, a decision that could offer countries a cheaper and more effective option than the world's first shot against the parasitic disease. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the UN health agency was approving the new malaria vaccine based on the advice of two expert groups, recommending its use in children at risk of the disease.

"As a malaria researcher, I used to dream of the day we would have a safe and effective vaccine against malaria. Now we have two," Tedros said.

Oxford University developed the new three-dose vaccine with help from the Serum Institute of India. Research suggests it is more than 75% effective and that protection is maintained for at least another year with a booster. Tedros said the shot would cost about $2 to $4 and could be available in some countries next year.

Earlier this year, regulatory authorities in Ghana and Burkina Faso approved the vaccine.

"This is one more tool we will now have, but it's not going to replace bed nets and spraying insecticides," said John Johnson with Doctors Without Borders. "This is not the vaccine that's going to stop malaria."

Big 4 raid each other's pools as talent war rages amid unprecedented growth ;-The Economic Times Oct 2, 2023

The talent merry-go-round among the Big Four has gathered pace with each firm looking to beef up its advisory practice and fill gaps in its services portfolio amid scorching growth.

Deloitte recently lured 150 members, including 15 partners, from KPMG to its tax division. After the development, KPMG actively courted 17-18 Deloitte partners along with their teams from the rival's risk and corporate investigation team who had earlier worked with the firm.

Meanwhile, PwC is said to be in the process of poaching eight partners from KPMG, along with more than 150 executives, for its risk team, according to industry executives.

Competition for talent has intensified as each of the top four accounting firms - EY, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG - has reported 25%-plus growth for 2022-23, with collective revenue close to $4 billion.

"In the last six months, PwC has welcomed 16 new partners and executive directors to its risk practice, with 50% coming from Big Four firms and the remaining 50% from non-Big Four backgrounds. We are constantly seeking exceptional talent," said Sivaram Krishnan, partner, PwC India.

With the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic, the top four accounting firms have experienced an unprecedented growth surge.
Growth fuelled by advisory sectors
The growth has primarily been fuelled by advisory sectors such as consulting and transactions, and technology-led transformation mandates.

Remarkably, even traditional domains such as audit and tax have seen more than 20% growth at each of these firms.

The resultant demand has sparked a churn at the level of not only teams but also individual partners, with 14-20 partners moving among the Big Four every month.

"Every few days there is an email welcoming a new partner. Most of them are from rival firms, and a few also from tech firms," a director at one of the firms said on the condition of anonymity.

Leaders at the Big Four said clients have made ambitious growth plans as the Indian economy expands, hence they have been hiring aggressively.

"India is defying the trend compared to western countries in terms of economic growth, and the India story is fundamentally robust. In this context, every company aims to prepare for the next phase of growth and relevance," said Vivek Prasad, markets leader at PwC India. "They require assistance in areas such as technology, ESG (environmental, social and governance),

re-engineering, innovation and, more importantly, building trust in the ecosystem. Consequently, leading firms like PwC are experiencing robust demand growth across their service lines."

While market leader EY has primarily favoured hiring smaller teams from competitors or recruiting industry experts, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG have been actively pursuing recruitment of larger teams from competitors.

At Deloitte India, the newly appointed leader, Romal Shetty, has set the firm on an aggressive growth trajectory and is scouting for talent in tax, risk and new technology areas.

"We aspire to increase our growth from Rs 8,000 (crore) to Rs 20,000 crore and expand our partner base to over 1,000 within four years," Shetty told ET in a recent interview. "Over the past four or five years, we have consistently achieved over 30% overall growth and, last year, our overall growth exceeded 40% as a firm. Deloitte India was the world's fastest-growing member within the network, and we are sustaining this momentum."

As part of its global strategy, 'The New Equation', introduced in 2021, Sanjeev Krishan-led PwC India has also been swiftly expanding its consulting, risk and digital operations. Currently, the firm is reportedly engaged in multiple hiring negotiations with teams in rival firms and multinational technology companies.

KPMG, which has been a target for large team movements in the past few years, is itself looking to hire large teams in advisory businesses, as the smallest Big Four in India has been clocking robust numbers too.

"India is one of the top three fastest growing markets across all geographies KPMG is present in," CEO Yezdi Nagporewalla had told ET last year.

Asked to confirm the team movements, KPMG and Deloitte spokespersons said the news was speculative and "there were no such discussions underway".

At the partner level, the firms require a six-month gardening leave.

While EY has not seen any large outward team movements, individual discussions between EY partners and other firms have notably increased following the dramatic collapse of Project Everest, the firm's auditing and consulting split initiative, multiple partners involved in hiring across rival firms told ET.

Short on senior talent on the technology consulting side, the top firms have been continuously poaching from Accenture to beef up their tech and AI teams.

These shifts come with enticing bonuses, loan schemes and stringent exit clauses, such as KPMG's proposed 50% salary cut during the six-month leave for partners who join a rival. Most of the teams which are moving are on gardening leave currently or involved in protracted negotiations with current and future employers.

Buddham Saranam Gacchami Mantra, Meaning and Benefits :-Meditative mind

Three Jewels of Buddhism are the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha and by reaching or by surrendering oneself to these three heals one from all sufferings and that journey starts with taking refuge in Buddha Dhamma Sangha.

Buddham saranam gacchami
I go to the Buddha for refuge.

Dhammam saranam gacchami
I go to the Dhamma for refuge

Sangham saranam gacchami
I go to the Sangha for refuge.

Meaning of Mantra

These words are not just for uttering, but for investigating, to go deep into their meaning. To meditate upon. Buddha means the one who takes us from Darkness to Light, towards wisdom. Towards higher consciousness towards mindfuless.  Dhamma is ‘Here – and – Now’, It is not taking refuge into some intellectual writings or anything but something we can access here and now. Sangha Means community, community where people support, help each other in the meditation practice. It is very important to have a community, so that when you are feeling down, when you are not feeling your 100%, or when you are stuck somewhere, the Community is there to Help you, to pull you up.

To know that there is some bigger, higher force or energy that is in play, and we all have access to that energy. And how can we access that force that energy? By surrendering, by taking refuge into that higher self, by becoming one with that, by becoming part of that force, that energy. Three Jewels of Buddhism are the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha and by reaching or by surrendering oneself to these three heals one from all sufferings and that journey starts with taking refuge in Buddha Dhamma Sangha.  This Mantra  is also called three gem of Buddhism.

Benefits of Chanting Mantra

  1. Awakening the mind
  2. Freedom from Suffering
  3. Direct Connection with divine forces
  4. Remains in the present
  5. Helps to surrender before God and go to the higher self
  6. This mantra helps in meditation practice.

Why Bangladesh is calling Canada a hub for all murderers Read more at: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com

Several requests by the Bangladesh government to extradite Noor Chowdhury have fallen on deaf ears and Dhaka may yet again move Ottawa on the issue, ET has reported.

Just as India is raising the issue of Canada giving a safe space to Khalistani extremists who carry out terror activities in India, Bangladesh has accused Canada of harbouring killers. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau kicked up a diplomatic storm by linking India to the murder of a Canadian citizen and Khalistani terrorist wanted by Indian security agencies, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in a gurdwara in Surrey, Canada, in June. Trudea's accusation was based on "credible allegations The diplomatic spat has brought to light how criminal fugitives not only find a safe space in Canada but also keep executive acts of terror in India.

Bangladesh has jumped into the issue by accusing Canada of harbouring killers. Bangladesh foreign minister AK Abdul Momen has said Canada must not be a "hub of all the murderers". "Murderers can go to Canada and take shelter, and they can have a wonderful life while those he killed, their relatives are suffering," Momen said in a TV interview recently.

When asked about Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rehman's killer who continues to live in Canada, Momen said, "He’s having a good life in Canada. He has been there. We have been requesting the Canadian government to send back the self-confessed killer of Bangabandhu, the father of our nation. Unfortunately, Canada is not listening to us and they have come up with a variety excuses. So, we also went to the Canadian court to understand what is the status, since he has been staying in Canada for a long time." Momen said.

Who are the Bangladeshi assassins Canada is sheltering?
In 1975, a coterie of middle-level Army officers planned a coup to topple Sheikh Mujib's elected government and replace it with a military government. They chose August 15, India's independence day, to carry out the coup.
