14 BASIC COMPUTER TERMS TO KNOW (AND THEIR MEANINGS) :-SOURCE INDEED EDITORIAL TEAM

Many individuals learn various computer terminologies and acronyms to improve efficiency and enhance their employment opportunities. These terms may also provide clarification for professionals who want to start a new career in the computer science or technology field. Learning computer terminologies can help you understand more about how the device functions, enabling you to use it for complex projects. In this article, we list 14 computer terms to help make data processing easier.

14 computer terms to learn

The following are basic computer terms to help you understand how each part of the device functions:

1. Central processing unit (CPU)

The CPU is a processing unit that functions as the engine of a computer. It controls all processes of a computer and communicates with other components. This device interprets the digital instructions of a computer application. You may measure a CPU's speed in gigahertz or GHz. Processors with more GHz often help the computer run faster.2. ModemThe modem is a hardware device that allows computers or routers to receive and send information over a cable or telephone line. When sending a signal, the device modulates by converting digital data to an analog audio signal. Then it transmits the sound over a telephone line and demodulates audio by converting it to digital sound. Some companies may use the modem to send and receive a fax or act as auto-answering machines. With the modem, computers can gain internet connectivity using telephone lines.

3. Bit and bytes

Bit is short for binary digit. It's the smallest and most basic unit of data a computer can store. Computers usually store the bit as zeros or ones. A byte is a group of eight bits. It contains enough information to store a single letter or number. Similarly, a kilobyte (KB) is a collection of 1,000 bytes. The following data measurements are similar to a bit:
  • 1 megabyte is 1000 kilobytes
  • 1 gigabyte is 1000 megabytes
  • 1 terabyte is 1000 gigabytes
  • 1 petabyte is 1000 terabytes

4. Web cookies

A web cookie or browser cookie is a text file that enables a website to store visitors' data. When you return to a page, cookies often enable the website to recognize you. Without them, websites may not remember your settings, logins, preferences, or the content you've already consumed. They're often safe as hackers cannot access your private information, but advertisers can use them to track your computer activity and perform targeted advertisements.

5. Random access memory (RAM)

RAM is a term for the computer's temporary data storage. This hardware stores data that individuals frequently access. For example, the RAM enables you to open applications and files easily because the computer can find them in its short-term memory. It's a volatile memory, meaning individuals may lose the content they save on RAM when they close their computer. As the RAM directly connects to the motherboard, it can increase a computer's speed. Having more RAM may make a computer perform better.

6. Spam

Spam is an irrelevant digital message that the computer may receive in bulk. In most situations, individuals often receive spam via e-mail, but they may also get it through phone calls, texts, and social media. For example, when there are multiple similar comments on a blog post, you may refer to it as spam. Spam can spread malware and trick a computer user into divulging personal information.

7. CAPTCHA

CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. It provides challenges that are easy for humans to complete but difficult for computers. For example, before accessing a website, CAPTCHA may ask you to identify the dog in a collage by clicking specific areas. Many websites use this tool to prevent computer bots from spamming registration systems and creating fake accounts. It's also helpful for preventing false comments on review sites and message boards.

8. Cache

Computers usually use a cache to move data between the RAM and CPU. A cache temporarily stores data in an accessible folder separate from a computer's main storage. This reserved storage often collects data to help apps, websites, and programs load faster. After you open a website or an app for the first time, the cache stores the files, images, and other content you access on the computer. For example, if you purchase goods online, it downloads all the images, script files, login information, and the content of your shopping cart. When you clear a browser's cache, the retail site may require your login information to restore the settings. You may pronounce this term as "cash."9. Bandwidth and broadbandThe term bandwidth refers to the maximum rate at which a computer can transfer data through a network within a specific time. Individuals usually calculate bandwidth in megabits per second, and as it increases, it becomes kilobytes. A broadband measures the speed it takes a computer user to download or upload data using an internet connection.

10. Port

A port is an interface or connection point between a computer and an internal or external device. External ports may let you connect a mouse, printer, modem, or keyboard to a computer. Internal ports can connect DVD drives or hard drives. A computer port has many functions, and they include:
  • Parallel ports: They usually connect printers.

  • Serial ports: These are common for connecting modems and mice.

  • Universal serial bus (USB) ports: Individuals use them to connect many devices, such as printers, USB drives, keyboards, hard disks, and mobile devices.

  • Small computer system interface ports: They can connect printers and at least seven devices to a computer.

11. World wide web and internet

The world wide web (www) is an interconnection of public web pages individuals can access through the internet. It's a network of online content, such as videos and pictures, that you can access with a web browser. Many individuals often use the terms world wide web and internet interchangeably, but they differ in meaning. The internet is a connection that allows you to send e-mails and access the world wide web. The world wide web generally consists of these components:
  • Hypertext markup language (HTML): This is the popular format for publishing web content.

  • Uniform resource locator (URL): The URL is the address of a web page.

  • Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP): It's a set of instructions that govern how to transfer files over the web.

12. Malware

Malware is the short form of malicious software. It refers to any software that hackers design to interfere with a computer's normal functions. These programs gain access to steal an individual's personal information, encrypt files, or damage important data. There are many types of malware, and each has specific ways of infiltrating a computer to cause harm. The following are common types of malware:
  • Worm: This self-replicating program affects a computer by spreading malicious codes to consume bandwidth and delete files.

  • Adware: It displays advertisements on an individual's screen to collect personal information.

  • Keyloggers: Hackers often develop this software to track the keystrokes on a keyboard and record them on a log.

  • Ransomware: This software encrypts a computer's files and blocks access to them until the user pays a ransom.

  • Trojan: Hackers use the trojan to gain access to a computer by disguising it as a legitimate application or program.

  • Spyware: It generally invades a computer to steal personal information, such as web browsing data, card details, banking information, and account passwords.

  • Rootkits: This program usually hides in a computer, enabling a hacker to control it remotely.
13. MotherboardA motherboard is the main circuit board that connects the various parts of a computer. It has plugs for the CPU, RAM, and cache. You may also refer to it as a system board, main board, or planar board. The motherboard functions to distribute power to the various parts of the computer.

14. Firewall

Computers often have a firewall that protects their network by filtering traffic from unrecognized sources. The firewall is a network security device that prevents unauthorized access to an operating system. It acts as a barrier between internal networks and external sources to protect a computer from malicious software. This software only grants access to legitimate IP addresses. An internet protocol (IP) address is a string of numbers that identifies each device connected to the internet or a network.

Gratuity calculation in CTC: How is gratuity calculated as a portion of employee's CTC in offer letter; Check formula;-ET

Employers usually include gratuity and the employer's contribution to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) in the CTC (cost to company) stated in your offer letter when you join a new organisation. While calculating the employer's contribution to the EPF is easier, not many understand how HR calculates gratuity in the offer letter.

It is important to note that the Payment of Gratuity Act of 1972 governs the payment of gratuity in India. Saraswathi Kasturirangan, Partner, Deloitte India, says, "When an offer letter is issued to a prospective new joinee, many companies reflect gratuity benefit in the offer letter, based on the basic salary mentioned in the offer letter."

Formula to calculate gratuity in offer letter

Puneet Gupta, Tax Partner at EY India, says, "As per Section 4(2) of the Payment of Gratuity Act, the gratuity is paid for every completed year of service and part thereof if completed more than six months. The employer must pay gratuity to an employee at the rate of 15 days' wages based on the rate of wages last drawn by the employee concerned."

According to the rule, the formula to calculate the gratuity is: Last drawn monthly wage X 15 / 26.

Kasturirangan says, "Gratuity is due to an employee when an employee leaves the organisation after completing a minimum service of five years. The liability provision is accounted for every year. Accordingly, organisations make an estimate of the annual incremental liability basis the actuarial valuation considering the last drawn basic salary (including dearness allowance if applicable). For this purpose, the eligibility is calculated at 15/26 of the monthly wage for every completed year of service”.

Gupta explains this with an example. Suppose the annual basic salary of an employee is Rs 100. The monthly basic salary will be Rs 8.33 (Rs 100/12). The gratuity per year of service will be 4.81, i.e., 8.33 X 15/26.

In the offer letter, 4.81% of your annual basic wages will be shown as gratuity.

Portion of CTC allocated to gratuity changes with basic salary revision

It is important to note that the amount of CTC allocated towards gratuity is revised with every revision in basic salary. Basic salary is normally revised annually after an employee undergoes an appraisal cycle. Kasturirangan says, "4.81% is applied on the current salary on a year-on-year basis since gratuity is payable on the last drawn basic salary, including Dearness Allowance, wherever applicable. It is an incremental liability based on actuarial valuation, considering the latest salary is accounted for on a year-on-year basis.

ET Exclusive: UK wants to be India’s premier league partner on FTA ground, says Jonathan Reynolds:-ET

Piyush Goyal (right) and Jonathan Reynolds

The UK wants to be India’s “premier league partner,” secretary of state for business and trade Jonathan Reynolds told Kirtika Suneja and Deepshikha Sikarwar in an interview. The proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two sides seeks to usher in a new era in the bilateral relationship, he said. In the absence of overall support for multilateral institutions, “you’ve got to get the job done” and bring down tariffs on a most-favoured nation (MFN) basis. Edited excerpts:

By when do you expect the proposed trade deal to be concluded?

I know there’s been a lot of speculation in the past. These agreements are important. We’re talking about a completely new era of UK-India relations. I hope for the UK to be what we call a premier league partner for India. In English football terms, that’s the strongest endorsement you can give a relationship. And so, getting it right is most important. I know Piyush Goyal thinks exactly the same as me on that, but (we’re) not putting a timeline for it.

What will the FTA include?

I won’t go into too much detail. It’s a full FTA — goods, services, investment. That’s why it’s so exciting because you have such a high level of ambition. Both the economies have such a complementary nature and we have a real agreement in certain areas already. This exceeds our expectations on both sides of the level of progress that was made. It’s the kind of agreement, when we get there, we’ll be able to say to people in both countries that this will make a real difference to both us, and improve people’s lives.

Ready to Take Difficult Decisions

We are starting from a strong position with strong investment flows. We’re not just saying, oh, it’s quite good at the minute. We’re saying let’s go beyond that and it covers all of those key areas.

What kind of assurance is the UK offering on work and holiday visas?

All this is part of the negotiations.

Are prime minister-level visits on the cards between the two countries to push the economic agenda?

Absolutely. First of all, we’re in a stronger position in the UK now because we have had decisive election results and the political stability that comes from a big majority in the House of Commons is significant. We had some difficult years, a lot of prime ministers in a short space and time. (Now there is) political stability combined with a genuine openness to the rest of the world. We want to use the mandate to improve the business and investment environment and take difficult decisions from the planning system to the skills system, expanding Heathrow Airport, tackling pensions to provide more liquidity for investment in the UK, that’s the whole agenda of the government. The two prime ministers have had an excellent meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is respected around the world. He is an incredibly effective leader, as one of the most experienced leaders. Our prime minister is always keen to have that conversation with him. I think they have a connection.

How do you see the tariff war playing out?

It’s a mandate for a different kind of a trade policy. We are seeking to engage with that. We understand that the US has very significant concerns about the size of its deficits in goods with China, the EU and other countries. That isn’t the case for the UK. We think we have a balanced trading relationship at present, one that is very mutually beneficial. We believe that there’s the prospect of engaging with the new US administration We’ve had some early conversations about that and found areas of collaboration. The pressures, the headwinds as you say are very evident across the global trading system. But, I would say to people that what we’ve been through recently — a pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the subsequent disruption — global trade is still set to increase this year by over 2.6%. Yes, it’s difficult, but for the UK, we want to be the most connected market in the world. We want to do this trade deal here with India. We’ve got aspirations to do something similar with the Gulf Cooperation Council. We’re going to improve that relationship with the EU that we’ve been left with by the Conservative Party because we're unencumbered by some of the politics. We’re going to be trying to turn this difficult situation into a competitive advantage for the UK. None of this is easy but there are benefits of strong trading links.

What does it mean for global trade?

I think it means that the institutions of multilateralism are under huge pressure, particularly the World Trade Organization (WTO), but again this has been the case for some time. The UK is committed to multilateralism. We want a rules-based order. It does mean that the relationship between particular countries bilaterally is even more important now.

Should countries bid goodbye to multilateralism as bilateral trade agreements become a staple?

We shouldn’t give up on multilateralism. Let's not forget that a huge proportion of global trade is still on WTO terms. What is clearly harder is relying on the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism to settle problems because, again, if it hasn’t got the active support of major players, you can’t rely on that. We’re still committed to that rules-based international trading system.

US, Ukraine agree to terms of critical minerals deal:-ET

The U.S. and Ukraine have reached a draft deal concerning Ukraine's minerals, which is key for securing U.S. support in ending the war with Russia. The agreement includes creating a fund to manage Ukrainian natural resources, but ongoing security and weapon discussions remain unresolved
