The Union Cabinet on January 7 approved a 10 percent reservation for economically backward upper castes in government jobs. The benefit would be extended to those earning less than Rs 8 lakh per annum. A constitutional amendment bill would be moved in Parliament to this effect.
It was immediately unclear as to how the Centre plans to accommodate the 10 percent quota as the total reservation would now reach 60 percent.
The move comes just months ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections which are expected to be held in April-May.
This is a developing story. Updates to follow
