The real 5G winners: Tower companies-news from USA

New York (CNN Business) Feb 26 2019 Telecommunications carriers around the world are busy getting ready to deploy 5G — the wireless technology that will usher in lightning-quick speeds and provide faster access to the cloud.
But the companies that stand to gain the most from 5G's expansion may not necessarily be telecom firms. They might not even be wireless chipmakers like Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM), or entertainment companies like Alphabet (GOOGL)-owned YouTube, Netflix (NFLX) and Electronic Arts (EA).
US tower operators Crown Castle (CCI)American Tower (AMT) and SBA Communications(SBAC) are likely to be the big winners in 5G's expansion.
The three stocks, which are near record highs, are each up about 10% so far in 2019 and have outperformed the broader market over the past year.
Here's why: The tower companies collect steady rental payments from the wireless carriers. Companies like Verizon (VZ) and CNN owner AT&T (T) need to lease space from the tower owners in order to install antennas, small cells and other wireless equipment for their networks.
The tower companies are already benefiting from increased demand for wireless services thanks to 4G mobile technology. That will continue as wireless companies prepare their 5G networks, which really won't be fully deployed until 2020 at the earliest.
MoffettNathanson analyst Nick Del Deo thinks the tower companies can continue to do well this year. He noted in a report after SBA's earnings were released that the pace of leasing activity should pick up further in 2019.
He added that satellite TV company Dish (DISH), in addition to the four large wireless telecoms, spent more to lease tower space in the fourth quarter.
Booming demand for 4G was great news for the tower companies in 2018. Crown Castle rental revenue increased from approximately $350 million in 2001 to more than $3 billion last year, CEO Jay Brown said during an earnings call with analysts last month.
That demand should grow further because of 5G.
"What I find really intriguing about 5G and some of the emerging technologies is that they have the potential to fundamentally alter the role of wireless networks, going from connecting over 300 million people in the US to potentially connecting billions of devices in the future," Brown said.
SBA Communications CEO Jeffrey Stoops touted 5G during the company's earnings conference call with analysts last week. He said he expects a great 2019, in part because of "the beginning of the development of 5G, which we believe will provide us with multiple years of solid customer demand and strong growth."
UBS analyst Batya Levi wrote in a report about SBA last week that this could be a record year for the company, in part because of "early 5G activity."
American Tower will report its latest earnings Wednesday.
5G is not just important to the United States. Carriers around the world will be upgrading their wireless technology, which could yield to big gains for international tower companies as well.
To that end, shares of China Tower, which went public in Hong Kong last year, are up more than 25% in 2019.

IAF jets strike terror camps across LoC in early morning raid Sources said Mirage 2000 fighter jets crossed the border and dropped precision strike bombs on terror camps.

      1

In an early morning strike, Indian fighter jets have struck at terrorist targets in Pakistan, destroying a training camp of the Jaish e Mohammed, the terror outfit that had carried out a suicide attack, killing 40 CRPF personnel in Pulwama on February 14.

While there has been no official word on the action yet, sources said that Mirage 2000 fighter jets of the air force crossed the border and dropped precision strike bombs on terror camps, causing considerable damage. Estimates for the damage are not currently available.

The strike is believed to have taken place around 4 am and the Pakistani establishment came out with a public statement an hour later, claiming air space violation by India. The Pakistani military claimed that an Indian jet dropped a payload (bomb) at Balakot without causing damage.

Balakot is located well within Pakistan and not in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. The strike is believed to have caused significant damage and a detailed assessment.

As per initial reports, no Indian jet has been damaged in the action that would have to be carried out with great precision and skill, given the Pakistani air defence network in the area.

Publically available aviation data shows some unusual activity over Indian skies in the morning as the air force went on high alert to track Pakistani movements.

Blaze in Aero India parking area guts 300 cars

Last updated on: February 23, 2019 18:40 IST

A major fire swept through the parking area of the Aero India event at the Yelahanka Air Force station in Bengaluru gutting about 300 cars on Saturday, the penultimate day of Asia’s premier air show, official sources said.

No casualties were reported in the blaze suspected to have been caused by dry grass fire aided by heavy winds, the sources said, adding the parking area was “far away” from the air force station.
The 12th edition of the five-day air show went on unaffected by the fire incident, which came three days after two jets of Indian Air Force’s aerobatic team Surya Kiran crashed, killing a pilot on the opening day of the event.
The scheduled morning aerobatic display was over before the fire broke out around noon while the afternoon programme was unhindered, Defence Public Relations Officer H L Guruprasad said.
The events slated for Sunday, the final day, would go ahead as planned, he said.

A blanket of thick black smoke engulfed the area causing panic among locals and visitors to the Aero India event.
Aero India, that was limited to officials, businesses and foreign delegations, media and restricted invitees for the past three days, was thrown open to public on Saturday.
“#AeroShowOpenParkingAreaFire In all, 300 cars burnt in the fire incident. Fire fully extinguished now. 10 FireForce and 5 other fire engines fought the fire under the leadership of Chief Fire Officer, West,” Director General of Police Fire Services M N Reddi said in a tweet.
“No injuries or any harm to people reported. Likely cause: dry grass fire aided by heavy winds,” he said.

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the fire, a Press Information Bureau (Defence Wing) release said.
The “unfortunate incident” happened around 11:55 am, it said.
Fire fighting services, rapid action force and National Disaster Response Force teams immediately reached the spot.
“IAF immediately launched one helicopter for aerial assessment, the helicopter assisted by providing effective directions to fight the fire. The fire was brought under control by deploying more than 12 fire fighting vehicles,” the release said.
It said the Air Show and Aero India venues were unaffected.
Confirming that there were no casualties in the fire incident, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy urged people to not panic and said he has directed officials to take necessary steps.
“No need to panic with regards to fire incident during the Aero India show. There is no loss of life. There are reports about vehicles getting burnt,” he said in a tweet in Kannada.
Eyewitnesses said they heard repeated blasts as the fire spread. Car owners rushed to the spot after they received information about the incident.

Dutt, who had taken voluntary retirement last year, had applied for the pension and other dues but was yet to get them. He has alleged that the environment in West Bengal is toxic and hellish due to the TMC government's excesses.

The former IPS officer has held Mamata Banerjee directly responsible for his death.
An ex-IPS officer in Kolkata had committed suicide on Tuesday. According to reports,Gaurav Dutt, a 1986 batch IPS officer, was found in a pool of blood at his residence. On Wednesday, the Kolkata police stated that from the preliminary post-mortem report, it was evident that Dutt had committed suicide.
Dutt’s wife had stepped out of their house in Salt Lake with their pet dog. When she returned, she had reportedly found Dutt in a pool of blood. Dutt was brought to a hospital bleeding profusely from a slit wrist. He was declared dead within an hour.
As per the latest reports, it has been revealed that Dutt has held CM Mamata Banerjee responsible for his death in a suicide note. He has alleged mistreatment by the TMC government. As per reports, Dutt has written in his suicide note, “The vindictiveness of this chief minister is unparalleled. My honest hard-earned savings have been blocked”. Dutt had taken voluntary retirement last year. He had applied for the release of his pension and other dues like provident fund and gratuity which totals to almost Rs 72 lakhs but was unable to get the funds released.
Dutt had a doctorate in land reforms. His father Gopal Dutt was a 1939 batch IPS officer who became the chief security officer of former PM Indira Gandhi in the late sixties. Gopal Dutt was also one of the first officers who were recruited for RAW.
Gaurav Dutt, as per a report in The Week, was the SP of the undivided Midnapore district when 1999-2000 the Keshpur political massacre had taken place. TMC and left front leaders had engaged in the brutal onslaught and many people were massacred. The TMC government later had initiated two departmental proceedings against Gaurav Dutt.
Dutt has reportedly written in his suicide note that while one case file was deliberately lost and no corruption charges could be formed in the other case, he was denied leaves, training, and deputations for years. He has stated that he was singled out and harassed.
Dutt has written that Mamata Banerjee has “victimised him for 10 years” and went all out to “demoralise him due to her single-minded vendetta for reasons best known to her”. Dutt’s note has mentioned that CM Mamata Banerjee is directly responsible for his suicide.
Dutt has written that West Bengal has a “Toxic and hellish” environment where not a single IPS officer can dare to open his mouth.
Dutt has also reportedly held many of his fellow IPS officers guilty for harassing him and ignoring his requests ‘to please the CM’. Over Mamata Banerjee’s recent dharna at Espalande against CBI, Dutt has written that it was all for show and the officers sitting with her have got palatial bungalows and SUVs for their support.
Citing his alleged harassment and suffering as the reason, Dutt has written, “I decided to take the drastic step to highlight genuine problems faced by honest officers in West Bengal, and other parts of India.”
The BJP has demanded a CBI inquiry over the officer’s death and the allegations leveled by him.

Ericsson case: Anil Ambani held guilty of contempt, to be jailed if he fails to pay Rs 453 crore in 4 weeks SC rejected RCom and Ambani's unconditional apologies saying they had shown a cavalier attitude.

In a big setback for Anil Ambani, the Supreme Court today held Reliance Group chairman and its two directors guilty of contempt for willfully not paying Rs 550 crore to Ericsson. Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson had filed three contempt plea in the Supreme Court for not clearing its dues.

A bench of Justices RF Nariman and Vineet Saran, however, asked RCom and Ambani to purge the contempt by paying Rs 453 crore to Ericsson in four weeks in addition to a Rs 118 crore amount lying with the court. Court has asked Ambani to pay Rs 453 crore to Ericsson in four weeks, failing which he will have to serve three months of jail term.

Additionally, apex court has imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on the three RCom entities. This will also have to be deposited within four weeks or the directors will spend a month each in jail.

The court rejected Rcom and Ambani's unconditional apologies saying they had shown a cavalier attitude to the administration of justice.

"Unconditional apology by Reliance can't be accepted given the attitude of the deponent to the highest court of the land. Three Reliance companies had no intention of payment of money, it amounts to contempt," SC said. Ericsson had sought contempt action by way of remanding them to civil prison and had also urged the court to seize the personal assets of ambani and recover its dues. Ambani, who was directed to be present during the two day long hearing on the contempt case, was present in court when the ruling was delivered.

The court had reserved its judgement on February 13 when Ericsson India had alleged that the Reliance Group has money to invest in the Rafale jet deal, but they were unable to clear its Rs 550-crore dues, a charge which was vehemently denied by the Anil Ambani-led company. Ambani told the top court that with the failure of its assets sale deal with elder brother Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio his company has entered insolvency proceedings and is not in control of the funds.

Reliance Communications (RCom) had told the court they had tried to move "heaven and earth" to ensure Ericsson gets its due but was unable to do so due to failure of assets sale deal with Jio.

His lawyer Mukul Rohtagi had argued that Ambani could not be held personally liable for the dues of a listed company.

The contempt plea was filed against Ambani, Reliance Telecom chairman Satish Seth, Reliance Infratel chairperson Chhaya Virani and SBI chairman

Karl Lagerfeld, who ruled Chanel design for decades, dead at 85

      • German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld helped set the luxury industry standard for five decades
      • Karl Lagerfeld was among fashion’s most prolific couturiers, producing outfits for Chanel, Fendi and his own label
Frankfurt/Paris: Karl Lagerfeld, the German fashion designer who helped set the industry standard for five decades with collections that dressed celebrities such as Princess Diana and actress Keira Knightley, has died. He was 85 years old.
The creative director at closely held Chanel for more than 35 years, Lagerfeld was among the fashion trade’s most prolific couturiers, producing outfits for the Paris-based luxury-goods maker, for Italy’s Fendi SpA and for his own label—all at the same time. Recognizable for his high-collared shirts, white ponytail, dark sunglasses and black fingerless gloves, Lagerfeld had a client list that featured stars of the stage and screen, including actresses Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett and the singer Pharrell Williams.
Lagerfeld “was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the Houseof Chanel’s success throughout the world," Chanel chief executive officer Alain Wertheimer said in the statement. “Not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinary creative mind."
      ‘Kaiser Karl’
Chanel announced Lagerfeld’s death Tuesday in a statement, saying his second-in-command Virginie Viard will take over creative work for the collections “so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on".
The fashion guru, who earned the nickname “Kaiser Karl" for an uncompromising approach to his work, joined Chanel in 1983, more than a decade after the death of founder Gabrielle “Coco" Chanel. He set about reviving the French maker of perfume and accessories with a modern look on ready-to-wear lines, helping it become one of the industry’s most successful companies.
“What I do Coco would have hated," Lagerfeld said in The World According to Karl, a 2013 book of his quotes. “I do what she never did. I had to find my mark. I had to go from what Chanel was to what it should be, could be, what it had been to something else."
An accomplished photographer who counted Helmut Newton and Andy Warhol as friends, Lagerfeld was the No.1 designer at Chanel, whose headquarters are two 18th-century buildings on Paris’s Rue Cambon. He considered the shirt the most important fashion item; defended Fendi’s use of fur against the protests of animal-rights activists; and said that wearing sweatpants is a sign “you lost control of your life". Voguecrowned him the “unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment" in 1997.
“We owe him a great deal: his taste and talent were the most exceptional I have ever known," said Bernard Arnault, chief executive officer of Fendi owner LVMH, in a statement. “Fashion and culture has lost a great inspiration."
Alongside figures like Arnault and Italy’s Giorgio Armani, he was instrumental in turning luxury fashion from a niche proposition into a global commodity with mass appeal. His runway shows pushed Chanel’s extravagance to the extreme—building forests, waterfalls, and beaches in Paris’s Grand Palais—while the price tags on Chanel’s handbags and tweed suits pushed skyward. He managed to preserve Chanel’s image as the ultimate luxury, while perfumes and nail polishes made the brand accessible to anyone.
      Sharp-Tongued
A sharp-tongued person with a bold disposition, he once gave an entire interview to Harper’s Bazaar about his cat, Choupette, with whom he shared a special bond, and said he avoided having children because it “makes you look 100 years old" when they become adults. His public comments also betrayed a willingness to offend anyone, taking aim at German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s choice of pants, former US first lady Michelle Obama’s hairstyle and the body weight of English singer Adele.
Born Karl Lagerfeldt on 10 September 1933, in Hamburg, he later dropped the final letter in his surname to make his fashion brand more marketable. Lagerfeld’s year of birth is sometimes given as 1938, a discrepancy that he refused to solve in interviews. His parents were Elisabeth Bahlmann, who was Swedish, and Otto Lagerfeldt, who made a fortune producing condensed milk in France and selling it in Germany. Lagerfeld had an older sister, Martha, and a half-sister, Thea.
      Childhood Boredom
“My problem as a child was that I was bored to death because I wanted to be a grown-up person," he said in a 2011 interview with the UK’s Independent newspaper. “My childhood was endless—from eight to 18 felt like hundreds of years."
At 14, Lagerfeld moved to Paris, where he studied drawing and history, spending much of his time alone while his parents traveled. After developing an interest in drawing cartoons, Lagerfeld designed a coat that won a contest run by the International Wool Association.
Lagerfeld then worked for Pierre Balmain and Jean Patou, for whom he was artistic director until 1963, when he went to Italy for a job at Fendi. That relationship lasted more than 50 years. During the 1970s, he designed for Chloe and switched to Chanel in 1983. He began his own label the following year, describing it as “intellectual sexiness".
Lagerfeld lived in Paris and had various residences over the years, including a chateau in Brittany, a palace in Monaco, a villa near Hamburg, apartments in Berlin and Rome, a villa in Biarritz, France, and a house in Vermont, according to the New York Times.
“I would like to be a one-man multinational fashion phenomenon," he once said.
