Feudal Buddha: The spread of Buddhism to Southeast Asia, Central & East Asia, had a lot to do with politics & economics Read more at: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com Sep 29,2023

Images of Buddha are popular in modern homes and health spas. It evokes peace, tranquillity and freedom from stress. It is the kind of artwork patronised by privileged people who are not very generous, but are forever in a state of gratitude. But the Buddha image evoked many other realities besides this one.

It all began in the 19th century when Europeans rediscovered Buddhism. They were able to translate the various Pali texts from Sri Lanka. They were excited that the mysterious giant images of sages that they found across East Asia, were actually the images of the same person. They were representations of a prince who lived 2500 years ago called Gautama Shakyamuni.

The Europeans at this time were also writing down the history of India. They used European history to serve as a template for Indian history. If Europe went from polytheism (Roman Empire) to monotheism (Christianity) to revolution of reason (Protestantism) to science, they felt India was on the same path. So Veda was equated with the polytheistic phase. Gita with the monotheistic phase, followed by the ritualism of fire-worship, cow-worship and idol-worship, a descent into ritualism challenged by the rational and serene Buddha. This understanding of India appealed to everyone - Buddha became the pinnacle of Indian wisdom, accepted by all from Gandhi to Nehru to Savarkar to Ambedkar.

But, now, we realise that that is a very simplistic understanding of Buddhism. The spread of Buddhism to Southeast Asia, Central and East Asia, had a lot to do with politics and economics. As Buddhism spread to different parts of the world over time, it also evolved dramatically. Three things draw attention to this.

Stupas, Circles and Giants

The earliest Buddhist sites show stupas, with grand gates and railings. They were built by great kings like Ashoka and Kanishka. Near the stupa was a Vihara, a monastery where the monks lived. Patronage of these monasteries established the greatness of kings. These monasteries, universities and rock-cut caves were often on trade routes that was under protection of these kings. So we find images of the Buddha protected by Vajrapani, symbol of the king's power. From these spaces emerged texts that speak of kings inviting monks to debate and deliberate on Buddhist matters. These became known as the great Buddhist councils. It added prestige to Buddhist schools and to the reputation of kings.

But in the 8th Century, we see a dramatic shift in Buddhist iconography. The old kings were primarily toll tax collectors. But the new kings control lands and we see the emergence of a feudal idea even in the artwork of the Buddha. We find, especially in the eastern part of India, the stronghold of Tantric Buddhism, paintings of one Buddha sitting in the centre, surrounded by many Buddhas around him. They face the four directions. So there is a senior Buddha and a junior Buddha. The senior Buddha lives in his own world in his own kingdom. He towers over the junior Buddhas, who also have worlds of their own. These are the Buddha Kshetras (territories). In another circle around these five Buddhas are the Bodhisattvas who engage with humanity and help reduce suffering. This circle of Buddha mirrors the circle of kings (Raja-mandala) described in the dharma-shastra texts, where the further away you move from the capital city of the king, modes of extraction of wealth shifts from rental income, to tax income, to tributes by feudal lords, to gifts from allies. Here, instead of a single king controlling the whole ecosystem for administrators, we now have various smaller kingdoms, who pay tribute to a dominant central Chakravarthi, who power extends to the circular horizon.

The third thing which started emerging from the 10th Century onwards was the images of giant Buddhas. These are especially popular in Central Asia and China. Here, you find these giant Buddhas standing or seated, especially overlooking trade routes. This is the primal Buddha, the Adi Buddha, appearing as a substitute to the idea of God, who dominates the vista. The images is sometimes identified as Maitreya, the future Buddha, or Vairochana, the transcendent Buddha, who permeates the whole universe. It mimics the idea of the Chinese Emperor, to whom everyone is beholden to. Buddhism played a key role after the Tang dynasty to overpower the stranglehold of the Confucian and Taoist courtiers. Buddhist monasteries emerged, after much struggle, as a key player in Chinese affairs. These monasteries introduced banking practices hitherto unknown in China, and perhaps played a key role in the emergence of paper currency. Before China, Buddhist monks had introduced metal currency along Indian trade routes.

Buddha - popularised in the early 20th century as a symbol of renunciation - was in fact a symbol of mercantile and political power in its long history of over 2500 years. His image was favoured by kings who collected toll tax, feudal lords who collected tributes and emperors who loved to dominate the landscape. That is why Buddha was visualised on pagodas, in mandalas and finally as giants looming over trade routes. Wherever Buddhism went, mercantile networks followed and currency usage spread. Performative spirituality is always an indicator of material abundance. For the rich fear losing their wealth to the hungry poor. And are grateful when Buddha prevents them from stressing too much about it.

Bribes and premiums to BMC push Mumbai property prices higher than in Dubai Read more at: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com Sep 30 2023

Notorious for being the most expensive city in India, in terms of real estate to start with, authorities are making matters worse for those buying real estate in Mumbai by charging hefty premiums and development charges.

A TOI in a report on Saturday noted that builders in Mumbai are being forced to pay large bribes to the authorities to procure building permissions.

Civic activist Nitin Killawala told TOI that there is no justification for why faraway suburbs, say Goregaon or Mulund, should cost more than properties in Dubai. "Residential apartments in swanky buildings on upmarket Sheikh Zaid road in Dubai is available at about AED 1000 per sq ft (approx. Rs 22,500 per sq ft) with world-class infrastructure," he said.

Killawala asserted that it is the flat purchasers who are forced to bear the brunt of not only the high premium charges but also the bribes that builders have to pay. "It is understood that to redevelop a property, land owners need to contribute to government or local authorities towards upgrading of infrastructure and other public amenities. However, the recent phenomenon of charging 'premium' is bizarre: it costs more than the construction cost of the project.

Governments and authorities change, but one thing has remained constant: consumers bearing the brunt. In 2014, TOI ran a headline story about the "price list" established by corrupt officials. According to information from industry insiders, the requests for bribes amounted to Rs 1,200 per square foot in the city centre, Rs 800 per square foot between Bandra and Andheri, and as much as Rs 600 per square foot in the eastern suburbs. Nearly ten years later, some developers have indicated that the rates have risen significantly, while others have been more cautious.

The TOI report on Saturday states that official premiums and cess collected from builders are a major "cash cow" for the BMC. The BMC in January 2021 gave a 50 per cent discount in premium payments for a duration of 13 months, in a bid to stimulate business recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, it managed to amass over Rs 13,500 crore in the given timeframe.

Despite the sustained uptick in prices, demand for residential properties in the city remains robust. Mumbai municipal area saw an annual increase of 27 per cent in registration of properties in August at 10,902 units on better housing demand, according to Knight Frank India.

"Mumbai's residential market continues to remain strong as aspiring homebuyers embrace the trend. Remarkably, the share of registration of properties valued at Rs 1 crore and above continues to rise, led by surge in property prices and increasing preference among homebuyers for more spacious accommodation," Knight Frank India Chairman and Managing Director Shishir Baijal said.

Overall, Baijal said the housing market of the city continues to show a positive outlook, bolstered by the ongoing consumer demand.

The last month saw the most successful August numbers in the past decade in terms of registration as well as revenue generated, the consultant said.

FROM A FRIEND IN CANADA-AS RECEIVED

*The Indo-Canada saga is not as simple as it appears. There are many layers underneath.*

*Many of you might be wondering why the relationship between India and Canada is on such a rapid downhill, looking at the events unfolding in last few days. Before, the C word that troubled India was China. Now, another C called Canada got added to it. I will not recount the events that have happened in the past few days that spoilt the relationship between India and Canada, you know them. I will try to explain you the background behind it.*

*It's a conspiracy that has been in the making for quite sometime, ever since the first visit of Trudeau to India in 2018. Trudeau operates in a left liberal ecosystem, which has a different yardstick to look at the world.* *They dont give importance to self reliance or nationalism but for them the liberal values and freedom of speech and actions attach importance. Modi is exactly opposite. He believes in authoritarianism and he is a staunch nationalist and believes in Akhanda Bharat. The 2019 victory of Modi has upset many calculations of many leaders across the World because another 5 years of right wing govt in India is not something that left liberal west is looking at.*
*The victory of Biden in 2020 elections brought the leftists in full force and though Biden didnt like Modi, he started building bridges as India is very important for US in their economic scheme of things. But Modi is not just a right wing leader but also a disrupter of the left eco system. He is being funded by the nationalist wing led by Adani and this is something that has to be cut first to check Modi. Thus appeared Rahul Gandhi who made it his single point agenda to criticize Adani and link him to Modi. The left liberal media like Economist (the largest selling business publication) and Washington Post (leading daily in US and Canada) have started giving milage to Rahul and started writing against Adani and Modi.*

*Then appeared George Soros and his Hindenburg report that was a direct assault on Adani. Adani who was the 2nd richest in the World before the report was removed from Top 20 post the report. The aim was to cut his money network to BJP. Alongside, liberals like Trudeau started to target India and its right wing govt. Ukraine also joined as India was warming up to Russia. Biden was however neutral. But G 20 changed it all. The way G 20 was conducted made many leader insecure. The accommodation of African Union and passage of Delhi declaration unanimously sky rocketed the popularity of Modi making even Biden a bit uncomfortable.*
*So, once Trudeau returned from his disastrous G 20 trip to India, he got into direct action of accusing India of a state sponsored killing of its citizen. He even raised it with Five Eyes group. Five Eyes is a intelligence wing of 5 countries, US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Trudeau used this platform and wanted to encourage its members to criticize India. This was an attempt to malign India and create a wedge with these countries. UK and its PM Rishi Sunak maintained neutrality. Australia and New Zealand have not reacted. Biden, yes the all important Biden slightly gravitated towards Canada and advised India to support Canada.*
*This is bound to happen because Biden and Modi, how much ever they hug each other can never be friends ideologically. Biden has an election to face in 2024 and so does Modi. Now he has to make his stand clear. The democrats ecosystem in US is investing in Biden to counter Trump who is again planning to contest as Republican. Everyone know the equation that Modi and Trump shares. Added to that Trump is planning to make the right wing Indo-American Vivek Ramaswamy as his running mate in 2024 . If Trump wins, Vivek will replace Kamala Harris. Kamala has zero liking for Modi and Vivek is a great admirer of BJP and Modi.*
*So, this is not just a fight for a Khalistani sympathizer. There is much more to it. Its a fight by left liberal ecosystem to ensure that there is a regime change in India in 2024. These guys can never imagine Modi winning in 2024. They want a liberal Rahul Gandhi with support of other parties to come to power so that this left liberals can have the hold again on the administration in India. As long as Modi is there, it is impossible for them to control policy decisions made in India. Now we need to see how Modi and BJP with RSS will manage this. They need funding and a lot of man power. The next big thing to watch is if Biden is going to come or not for Republic day parade. So far white house has not confirmed it. If he skips, then be sure that its a open war between the left and right ecosystems in India. This Canada story is just a trailer and a side show. The real story is just starting now....*

More than 100 dead, 150 injured in Iraq wedding inferno Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq told Reuters that 113 people had been confirmed dead, with state media putting the death toll at at least 100, with 150 people injured. REUTERS SEPTEMBER 27, 2023 / 06:51 AM IST

More than 100 people were killed and 150 injured in a fire at a wedding party in Hamdaniya district in Iraq's Nineveh province that left civil defence searching the charred skeleton of a building for survivors into the early hours of Wednesday.

Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq told Reuters that 113 people had been confirmed dead, with state media putting the death toll at at least 100, with 150 people injured.

The fire ripped through a large events hall in the north-eastern region after fireworks were lit during the celebration, local civil defence said, according to state media.

"We saw the fire pulsating, coming out of the hall. Those who managed got out and those who didn't got stuck. Even those who made their way out were broken," said Imad Yohana, a 34-year-old who escaped the inferno.

Video from a Reuters correspondent at the site showed firefighters clambering over the charred wreckage of the building, shining lights over smouldering ruins.

DECLARE CANADA AS STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM

India must demand the Western Bloc countries to declare CANADA as “Terrorism Sponsor State”. The least that the Western Bloc countries may like to do is to place CANADA on the FATF Grey List.
Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of CANADA, must stop making claims of "Credible Evidence/Credible reasons” of India’s involvement in killing a Canadian Citizen, who is a Khalistani Separatist leader, on its soil.
Justin Trudeau invoking high sounding phrases like “Rules Based Order”, “freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest” and Rule of Law must remember that he is only confirming breeding terrorists and gangsters on the CANADIAN turf.
Enough or plenty of evidence is available in public domain about Justin Trudeau failure to counter the Sikh Khalistani terrorist activities openly and terrorist financing. Surely, the Indian Government has given enough ‘fool proof’ evidence of active Khalistani terrorist’ support to its cells in Punjab/India from its soil aided and abetted by the ISI of Pakistan.
For example, the World Sikh Organization (WSO), Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) are allegedly operating freely from Canadian soil at the behest of Pakistan. Also in the public domain is the information that at least nine separatist organisations supporting terror groups have bases in Canada and despite multiple deportation requests by India. No action against those involved in heinous crimes, including the killing of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, has been taken by CANADA.
Justin Trudeau has turned a “Blind Eye” to India’s MEA request for deportation of 8 individuals involved in terror activities and as many gangsters, who have been conspiring with Pakistan's ISI operating from safe havens in Canada.
Can Justin Trudeau deny the Khalistani Separatists aiding and abetting the violent protests during the Farmers Protests from Canadian soil. By his silence, Justin Trudeau must remember that he too is responsible for interference in the domestic affairs of India.
For Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party which is a minority , it may be a domestic political compulsion to allow Khalistani separatists to operate from its soil to gain the support of Canada's New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, to remain in power.
But, how can Justin Trudeau claiming to believe in “Rule Based Order”, freedom of conscience and freedom of peaceful protests” allow the Sikh Separatist gangs to desecrate Hindu Temples and vandalize Indian diplomatic missions? Come along Justin Trudeau, give another fake or fraud allegation against India.
Justin Trudeau must realize that he is feeding snakes in his backyard. A day may also come when the Sikh groups may demand a “Separate Khalistan State” CANADA. After all, there are many places where 80 percent of the inhabitants are Sikhs.
As of the 2021 Census, there are nearly 800,000 Sikhs, who account for 2.1% of Canada's population. It is the fastest-growing and fourth-largest religious group. The largest Sikh populations are found in Ontario, followed by British Columbia and Alberta. More than half of Canada's Sikhs can be found in cities: Vancouver CMA - 222,165 (8.52%);Abbotsford– Mission CMA - 41,665 (21.69%); Surrey - 154,415 (27.5%), Calgary - 49,465, and Edmonton - 41,385 Brampton - 163,260; Abbotsford - Fraser Valley - 25.46%; Metro Vancouver -17.93%; Cawston -16.36%; Okanagan-Similkameen - 15.87%; Okanagan-Similkameenmeen -14.34% among others.
None can rule out the possibility of Chinese, who wield significant political clout in Canada, involvement to destabilize India in collaboration with Pakistan, the ISI and the Khalistani Separatists.
Most importantly, despite leaked intelligence reports about Chinese interference in Canada's last two federal elections in 2019 and 2021, Justin Trudeau has refused to hold a public probe into the matter. Key figures in the Liberal Party have long historical ties to the CCP.
Justin Trudeau, during his first election campaign in 2016, visited the homes of "wealthy Chinese-Canadians for private fundraising events. Some of the hosts had close connections with the CCP and had been actively promoting Beijing's takeover of islands in the South China Sea."
Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party is "permitting China to colonize Canada." Chinese money laundering inflated Canadian property values for decades and helped push home ownership out of reach for today's buyers. On drug addiction: China is the main source country of fentanyl found in Canada, paving the way for thousands of overdose deaths. On the economy: China has targeted a host of Canadian industries for control, from lobsters to lithium."
Viewed in the consolidation of Chinese and Khalistani Separatists political clout and influence, it goes without saying that the USA, UK and other Western Bloc countries need to be extremely cautious in dealing with Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party.
And, India must aggressively carry forward diplomatic offensive against the happenings in CANADA in the name of “FREEDOMS” to be branded as a Sponsor State of Terrorism" and classify it as Grey State in the FATF

Canada faces global embarrassment for honouring a Nazi veteran; Russia, ...

How India is pouring billions of dollars into Canada's economy :-The Economic Times

Indian students from Punjab studying in Canada contribute approximately Rs 68,000 crore ($8 billion) annually to the Canadian economy, according to Sikh Vox. Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada reveals that a significant number of Indian students, particularly from Punjab, pursue courses in Canada. The total number of Punjabi students enrolled in Canadian educational institutions is estimated to be around 3.4 lakh.

Students from Punjab who go to study in Canada spend about Rs 68,000 crore in that country, nearly $8 billion, annually. That's a recent estimate by Sikh Vox, a website on the Sikh diaspora. The estimate is based on the number of students studying in Canada and the average college fees plus living expenditure, etc. According to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a total of 226,450 visas were approved for Indian students in 2022. Of these, a significant portion, approximately 1.36 lakh students, hailed from Punjab, pursuing various courses with an average duration of two-to-three years, says the report by Sikh Vox. Current estimates from student visa processing agencies suggest that around 3.4 lakh Punjabi students are currently enrolled in various educational institutions across Canada.

But if you include students from other states of India who go to Canada for post-secondary education, the number could be near $20 billion. Such a huge amount of money pouring in every year from India underlines the importance of Canada-India ties. Rising consumer demand in India not only boosts the Indian economy but is now contributing to foreign economies too.

How Indians fund Canadian education system
College fees constitute a significant part of the total annual expenditure of Indian students in Canada, and the Indian money going into the education sector in Canada has made headlines in recent times. Indian students have even left behind the government in Canada in funding of the public education system. International students from India have outpaced the government of Ontario, a province in Canada, in funding public colleges, a recent report has highlighted.

Given that tuition fee for international students is something like three times what it is for domestic students (exact data is difficult to pin down because Statistics Canada chooses not to track tuition fees at the college level), that means that something like 76% of all tuition fees in the sector come from international students, says a recent report published by Higher Education Strategy Associates, a Toronto-based consulting firm that provides research, analysis and strategic advice related to higher education.
As the above graph shows, since a majority of these international students come from India, it turns out that Indian students not only contribute twice the amount of money to the college system, on aggregate, that Canadian students do, they also contribute slightly more than does the Government of Ontario.

These numbers could be shocking for many in Canada, the report says. "Numbers like these tend to induce shock. How can it possibly be that Indian students are paying more into the system than Queen’s Park [the seat of the Assembly of Ontario]? The answer is simply this: Ontario institutions, faced with deep cuts in income, have acted precisely the way the government asked them to — that is, by acting entrepreneurially and securing new forms of revenue. This isn’t a mistake: this is exactly what the Ontario government requires."

In short, the Ontario government doesn't have sufficient money to fund its educational institutions and it wants them to earn more from International students, and in the above example, the students from India.

Indian students not only contribute slightly more than does the Government of Ontario but they also contribute twice the amount of money to the college system, on aggregate, that Canadian students do, said the report.

A government analysis from March 2022, which mapped the period when Covid had disrupted International students' enrolment in Canadian colleges, showed that International students contribute over $22.3 billion per year to the Canadian economy – greater than exports of auto parts, lumber or aircraft.

Why do Canadian colleges need more international students?

Since about 2000, the number of international students at the post-secondary level in Canada has risen dramatically, from just under 40,000 in the late 1990s to almost 420,000 in 2020-21, says the report by Higher Education Strategy Associates. This rise was gradual at first, then very rapid from 2009 onwards.
The report cites several reasons for this growth: international students bring diversity to classrooms across the country and (marginally) because their presence burnishes institutions’ standings in world rankings, which regard the presence of international students as an indicator of quality. However, the main reason is that international students pay much higher tuition fees than domestic students and are thus seen as a way to offset stagnant government funding. In 2021-22, international students made up 17.6% of all university enrolments and 22% of all college enrolments. Growth has been most rapid in Ontario’s college sector, where international student numbers roughly doubled between 2016-17 and 2019-20.

At the university level, international students are a bigger part of the student body in the Atlantic provinces than they are elsewhere; at the college level, it is the reverse, with international enrolments lower in the five eastern provinces but hugely important west of there, especially in Ontario, which accounts for about 70% of all international college students in Canada.

Rising consumer demand in India fuels rush to Canada
Better career opportunities and permanent residency that follows foreign education, especially in Canada, attract Indian students. But the recent rise in numbers of such students can be attributed to rising consumer demand and higher incomes in India as well as more awareness about foreign destinations due to social media.

Indian students opting for higher education abroad are rapidly increasing and their growth outpaced domestic student growth by more than six times in the previous three years to reach around 7,70,000, said a report by consulting firm RedSeer in 2019. The report estimated that the number was expected to grow to 1.8 million by 2024. Covid had disrupted the trend but it's now coming back on track.

The significant increase in outflow of students over the recent years is driven by better educational quality and outcomes abroad; higher standards of living ; gaps in the Indian education system leading to supply-demand imbalance and upward income mobility of Indian households, said the report.

There has been a massive increase in incomes in India over the past two decades that has translated into growing spends on post-secondary education. Additionally, people are becoming more aware of the benefits of studying abroad and Indians have a rising diaspora in popular destination countries which is leading to more applications abroad and student outflows.

New poll shows Biden trailing behind Trump :-Rediff.com and used here for Students educational purposes only in this non commercial blog

A new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News has shown President Joe Biden trailing behind his predecessor Donald Trump in a hypothetical November 2024 match.

"Trump edges out Biden 51-42 in head-to-head matchup," the poll said. Trump is way ahead of his other Republican rivals in the party's presidential race.

The GOP's formal nomination process will begin with the Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire Primary in January.

While two of the Indian-American Republican presidential aspirants -- former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy -- have gained momentum in recent weeks, Trump is far ahead of his GOP rivals and political pundits believe that he is on his way to becoming the party's nominee.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Sunday said that a record number of Americans say they have become worse off under Biden presidency. Three-quarters say he's too old for another term and Donald Trump is looking better in retrospect -- all severe challenges for Biden in his reelection campaign ahead, according to the poll results.

However, the Washington Post disagrees with the results of the poll. The prominent American daily reported that the poll showing Trump beating Biden by 10 points is likely an "outlier" as the two rivals are in a dead heat according to other polls.

"The Post-ABC poll shows Biden trailing Trump by 10 percentage points at this early stage in the election cycle, although the sizable margin of Trump's lead in this survey is significantly at odds with other public polls that show the general election contest a virtual dead heat. The difference between this poll and others, as well as the unusual makeup of Trump's and Biden's coalitions in this survey, suggest it is probably an outlier," the daily said.

According to the poll, Trump is favoured by 54 per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is second at 15 per cent, down from 25 per cent in May. -- PTI

Indian students now looking beyond Canada for alternatives amid safety concerns :-The Economic Times Sep 24,2023

As diplomatic relations between India and Canada face a challenging phase, prospective students eyeing North America for their higher education may soon reconsider their options. As per a TOI report, experts caution that safety concerns, coupled with potential hate crimes in Canada, could influence students' decisions. They advise caution while emphasizing that there are plenty of alternative educational opportunities, both within India and in other countries.

The fear of a shift in students' preferences from Canada to other nations for higher education is becoming palpable, echoing past trends witnessed with the US and Australia following reports of racial attacks against Indians. While the shift is currently in its infancy, some students with offers are already seeking advice on deferments and exploring alternative choices.

Akanksha Vora, a student enrolled at Seneca College in Toronto, shared her apprehensions, saying, "There is a lot of uncertainty. My parents and family are worried. I am also waiting for some advice from my college, but I have started taking classes online for now."

Similarly, Affan Suhail, an MBA aspirant set to begin in Fall 2023, expressed his concerns, "My application and visa process is complete, but the recent developments have confused us. I am investing Canadian dollar 30,000 for my education, and the conflict has put my family's earnings at risk. I'll either defer to a later intake or switch to the US."

J K Verma, a concerned parent, added, "My daughter's original preference was Canada for a Luxury Management Program. We had selected HEC Montreal and Royal Roads University, but are now planning to switch to France. PSB Paris School of Business and College De Paris are the new options from France."

Vaibhav Gupta, co-founder and chief marketing officer of iSchoolConnect, noted a growing trend, stating, "We have started getting calls from prospects planning to go to Canada to specifically ask for additional countries as part of their shortlisting. The two major preferences are the US and the UK. Australia is third in number, with France, Germany, and Ireland more or less at the same position."

Ravi Veeravalli, principal consultant with Star Global Education Alliance, acknowledged  students' concerns, saying, "A lot of students are on tenterhooks. I won't say there is a security threat to them as of now, but students are feeling the stress over concerns of backlash."

Even educational counselors are fielding calls from parents whose children are already in Canada. Pervin Malhorta, career counselor and founder of Career Guidance India (CARING), remarked, "There is a lot of confusion. The Fall intake has already landed. The January visas are yet to process. But the concern now is of discrimination and racial backlash."
