Theresa May - $202,769

Theresa May - $202,769

The British prime minister’s salary was at the centre of much debate last year when the country’s University Minister raised questions about the high salaries that vice-chancellors of British universities received against the “paltry” amount in May’s kitty. According to reports, May gets an annual salary of $202,769. However, don’t go feeling sorry for her just yet. The UK’s second woman prime minister gets an enviable line of perks to go. For instance, an almost no-holds-barred travel expense account of $712,072 a year, an official country residence worth $397,000 a year and a handsome retirement plan of $148,500 a year.

Donald Trump - $569,000

Donald Trump - $569,000

Before taking office, the US president had promised to donate his annual salary to various federal agencies. For the businessmanturned-president though, this hardly burns a hole in his multibillion dollar net worth. So far, Trump has donated his $400,000 per annum salary in three quarterly instalments to various agencies, most recently to the department of transportation. However, this figure is just half of what Trump really earns. He gets an extra expense allowance of $50,000 a year, a $1,00,000 non-taxable travel account and $19,000 for entertainment, which means his total income amounts to a grand total of $569,000.

Lee Hsien Loong - $2.2 million

The 13-term strong Singaporean prime minister is the highest paid world leader with an annual salary of $2.2 million. According to reports, his monthly salary is about $147,000. No wonder that he has been on the receiving end of a lot of flak from citizens. However, Lee has deemed his wages to be “fair and realistic”. For some added perspective, the entire annual budget of Singapore is around $53 million, while the minimum salary offered to Singaporeans is roughly $1,000 per month. To add to the countrymen’s frustration, a review committee last month had proposed a nine per cent salary hike for government officials, including Loong. Thankfully, the parliament rejected the proposal.

Justin Trudeau - $345,400

Justin Trudeau - $345,400

It turns out the prime minister of Canada gets not one, but two pay checks; the normal PM salary, plus another for being a member of parliament. While both were pegged at $170,400 till about two years ago, they were raised in April 2017 to $172,700. This means Justin Trudeau gets paid $345,400 for the year. But that’s not all. He also gets perks: Two official residences, an armoured car, a $2,000 car allowance, and shared access to two airplanes.
