India's first bullet train services between Mumbai to Ahmedabad will be completed by December 2023 according to a report in news agency PTI. The fare for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train would be around ₹3,000, an official of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) said. When operational, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will traverse through Maharashtra and Gujarat and the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Key things to know about the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor, commonly called the bullet train project:
1) Upon completion, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will make 70 trips, 35 on each side between 6 am till 12 am.
2) The construction work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train line will likely to begin by March 2020.
3) Civil work for Ahmedabad High Speed Railway Station has already begun at the existing railway station in the city. This new railway station for the bullet train will be built over the existing railway lines on the eastern side above platform no 10, 11 and 12.
4) The proposed 12 stations along the bullet train corridor include Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand and Ahmedabad, Sabarmati
5) The bullet train will run at a speed of 320 kmph and cover the Mumbai-Ahmedabad distance in an expected three hours.
Most of the corridor will be elevated, except for a 21 km underground tunnel between Thane and Virar, of which 7 km will be undersea.
The project, estimated to cost ₹1.10 lakh crore, is being built with help from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which agreed to fund 81% of the total project cost ( ₹88,087 crore), through a 50-year loan at an interest rate of 0.1%. The remaining cost will be borne by the Maharashtra and Gujarat government, Hindustan Times reported.
