NEW DELHI: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will attend next year’s Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest, as New Delhi and Brasilia seek to upgrade their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership with larger cooperation in defence and space sectors.
“Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi invited the President of Brazil to be the chief guest at the Republic Day 2020. The Brazilian President has accepted the invitation with pleasure,” said a statement issued after a Modi-Bolsonaro meeting in Brasilia, on the side lines of the BRICS Summit.
ET was the first to report that India would invite Bolsonaro. He is the third Brazilian President to be invited for Republic Day celebrations, after Fernando Henrique Cardoso in 1996 and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2004.
