NEW DELHI: Apple supplier Wistron said that it sacked Vincent Lee, vice president for India business following the violence at the Narasupara facility.
“This is a new facility and we recognize that we made mistakes as we expanded. Some of the processes we put in place to manage labor agencies and payments need to be strengthened and upgraded. We are taking immediate action to correct this, including disciplinary action. We are removing the Vice President who oversees our business in India,” the company said in a statement on Saturday.
Wistron said that it is now enhancing its processes and restructuring teams to ensure these issues cannot happen again.
Sources privy to the development have informed ET that the firm has settled the pending payments issue and it is personally contacting each employee to confirm the payment received.
Wistron has also formed teams to look after wage-related issues to ensure that the factory operations get back on track as soon as possible. The teams are also in touch with the employees, the sources further said.
A week ago, a mob of some 7,000 people, including workers, vandalized the Taiwanese iPhone maker’s plant due to an alleged dispute over delayed wages and overtime, as per official records.
Following the riots at the plant, the local police arrested or detained about 150 people in connection with this incident.
The company was planning to hire up to 25,000 employees by the end of next year and was planning to invest an additional Rs 900 crore in Karanataka to expand its manufacturing facility.
The contract manufacturer had previously announced Rs 1,947 crore investment in India.
Notably, the contract manufacturer firm has 12,000 employees at the plant. Out of this, about 1,200 are understood to be permanent employees while others are hired on a contractual basis.
“Since the unfortunate events at our Narasapura facility we have been investigating and have found that some workers were not paid correctly, or on time. We deeply regret this and apologize to all of our workers,” the iPhone maker said in an official statement on Saturday.
The company said it is working full-time to fully compensate its workers on a priority basis. It has also established an employee assistance program for workers at the facility.
To enable its workers and employees to voice their concerns anonymously, it has further set up a 24x7 grievance hotline in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and English.
“We are deeply committed to our business and employees in India. We are working diligently on corrective actions to ensure this does not happen again,” it said further.
