Voicing deep apprehensions about the rise of Khalistani factions in Canada, India has called on the North American nation to stop providing a safe haven and political space for criminal and secessionist elements. India has also expressed concerns for the security and safety of diplomatic representatives stationed in Canada.
India has urged Canada to take decisive measures to ensure that diplomatic personnel can fulfill their duties without fear or hindrance. The Indian government has called on Canadian authorities to curb the proliferation of criminal and secessionist elements within their borders.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, 'We remain deeply concerned about the security of our diplomatic representatives in Canada and expect the Government of Canada to ensure that they can carry out their responsibilities without fear. India slams Canada over photos of Khalistani floats
India raised concerns regarding the violent imagery being used by extremist elements in Canada against political leadership.
Last year, a float depicting the assassination of the former Prime Minister was used in a procession. Display of posters of Indian diplomats have also been put out across Canada threatening violence against them.MEA said, "Celebration and glorification of violence should not be a part of any civilized society. Democratic countries which respect the rule of law should not allow intimidation by radical elements in the name of freedom of expression."
India-Canada relations after Nijjar killing
Relations between India and Canada soured when the Canadian Prime Minister accused agents of the Indian government of being responsible for the assassination of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023. India, however, has refuted these allegations as "absurd" and "motivated."
Nijjar was fatally shot after leaving a gurdwara in Surrey in June of the previous year. A video allegedly depicting his killing emerged in March of the current year, purportedly showing Nijjar being gunned down by attackers in what was described as a "contract killing."
