Detailing about the plan to end war with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that security guarantees for Kyiv would be effective only if provided by the United States and he hoped to meet US President-elect Donald Trump post his inauguration.
Zelenskyy spoke with American podcaster Lex Fridman in an interview published on Sunday and said that Ukrainians are hoping that Trump would force Russia to end the war but cautioned that if the US were to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), then the Kremlin would escalate into Europe. In February, it would be three years since Russia invaded Ukraine and the return of Donald Trump to the White House on January 20 has raised hopes for a ceasefire deal but Ukraine is cautioned that it might come at a heavy price.
Acknowledging that its allies in Europe would be militarily weak to counter Russia, Zelenskyy said “Without the United States, security guarantees are not possible. I mean these security guarantees that can prevent Russian aggression.”
During the podcast, Zelenskyy noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not interested in serious negotiations to end the war, and that the Kremlin would have to be compelled to sign a truce.
Zelenskyy claimed that he and the Republican leader Trump saw eye to eye on the need for a “peace through strength” approach in order to end the war with Russia.
However, Zelenskyy said that it was up to the United States to determine its future but if Washington under Trump exits the military alliance NATO, it would weaken the grouping and embolden Putin in Europe.
I’m simply saying that if it does (quit the alliance), Putin will destroy Europe,” he said. Zelenskyy added that he needs to sit down with President-elect Trump to chart a course of action to halt the Kremlin.
