NEW DELHI: The union government approved national highways and waterways projects worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore for Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The projects were taken up for approval in a joint review meeting by roads transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and UP deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya.
“The total cost of projects approved is Rs 1.5 lakh crore. We will soon start the work on detailed project reports,” Gadkari said. “The projects would be taken up by the National Highways Authority of India and, wherever needed, they will be sent to the union cabinet for approval,” he said.
Adityanath said the projects also include creation of infrastructure in Allahabad for the Kumbh festival that will be held in 2019.
“Seventy-two state highways would be upgraded to national highways. Fifteen greenfield highway projects would be taken up and the NHAI will also build an expressway connecting Lucknow with Bundelkhand,” Adityanath said.
He said several big-ticket infrastructure projects would be taken up in the backward regions of Bundelkhand and eastern UP. “All major big cities of UP such as Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Moradabad and Meerut would also get ring roads,” he said.
Gadkari said his ministries would provide world-class infrastructure for the Kumbh festival in Allahabad. He also said that the portion of Ganga flowing through Uttar Pradesh would be made navigable.
“Several infrastructure projects that are being taken up in Varanasi, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi would also be fast tracked," Gadkari said.
