The demand for air purifiers have increased greatly over the past couple of years, especially in northern Indian, as air quality dips with the onset of winters.

While air purifiers are the most cost effective solution for fighting indoor air-borne pollutants there are doubts regarding its usage in India.

Also, with opinions varying between air purifiers being of little use to air purifiers are effective only when you sit near them, there are several myths that have gained significant prominence over the years.

We try to bust some of the most common myths around air purifiers in India.
2/7

Indoor air purifiers are useless

Given the high levels of outdoor pollution, air purifiers help in creating a clean air bubble inside your room. It protects you from the polluted air outside and it is proven to be effective.

Very few people understand that indoor air is much more polluted. There is no doubt around the effectiveness of air purifiers.

When do air purifiers not work?

This totally depends on the air quality outside. If the air is bad outside then it advisable to keep doors and windows shut. However, during cooking, dusting or when there is some smoke inside the room like from incense sticks or cigarettes, it is highly advisable to keep windows open to boost the effectiveness of the air purifier. Also, shutting doors and windows for a long time will cause a rise in Carbon dioxide. As air purifiers do not remove Carbon dioxide, it is highly important to occasionally open the windows. Keeping doors and windows open will reduce the effectiveness of the air purifier.

True test

Odour has nothing to do with clean air. It totally depends on which type of filter you are using. If there is activated carbon in the filter, you can expect some difference, otherwise in general, air purifiers are not meant to kill odour.

Odour is one of the tests but its is definitely not everything. If your air purifier model has carbon filter and offers this feature then it should ideally work. Else, the majority of the air purifiers do not kill odour.

AC rooms don’t require air purifiers

Absolutely wrong. Air conditioners simply regulate the temperature of the air inside the room. It has no role in removing pollutants.

ACs are ineffective for smaller particles and AC rooms require air purifiers to filter pollutants.

Cleaning or replacing air filter

HEPA filters have a capacity. You can brush the outside surface of the filter but, the trapped particles inside stays and reduces the efficiency of the air purifier.

Brushing the air filter might help till some extent but it will greatly reduce the effectiveness overtime.

No point buying expensive air purifiers

Air purifiers come in different capacities and filter quality. An air purifier model for a small room will not be effective for large or multiple rooms. Also, the quality of the air purifier matters a lot.

It totally depends on the feature, filter quality and whether it can kill germs, bacteria and other air-borne viruses or not. In general, air purifiers simply filters particulate matter. But there are specialised air purifiers which even kills tuberculosis bacteria, of course, these will cost more.
