Delhi: Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of the USD 41 billion
(about Rs 2.74 lakh crore) Aditya Birla Group, turned 51 today. He took over
the company in 1996 at age of 29, after the sudden death of his father Aditya
Vikram Birla. The business tycoon's net worth has been estimated at USD 12.6
billion (about Rs 85,000 crore), according to Forbes 2017 report. Birla and wife
Neerja have three children, daughter Ananyashree (24), son Aryaman Vikram (22)
and youngest school-going daughter Advaitesha (16).
Apart
from the role models that he has within the family, Birla admires Infosys
founder Narayana Murthy and Jack Welch, the former chairman of General
Electric, according to an Economic Times report.
Here are
5 interesting facts about one of India’s most successful businessmen:
1. He was born in Kolkata and brought up in Mumbai. He got his
Bachelor of Commerce degree from H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. He
pursued his MBA from London Business School. Before he went abroad for his MBA,
he became a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of
India.

"In 20 years of being at work, I have lost my cool three times and
each time for a good reason. For him this is an achievement considering outside
of office, he loses his cool five times a day," the business tycoon told
the Economic
Times in an interview in 2015.
3. Kumar
Mangalam Birla rates the years studying chartered accountancy as one of the
biggest challenges of his life. He cleared the exam in his first attempt and
was among the toppers, but the angst of those "four painful years"
remain fresh in memory, says an Economic
Times report. He was appointed as the chairman of Board of
Trade constituted under Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He has also served
as the chairman of Ministry of Company Affairs' Advisory Committee.
4. He is an educationalist as well and is the Chancellor of
Birla Institute of Technology and Science. He is also the chairman of IIT
Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad and Rhodes India Scholarship Committee for Oxford
University and is an Honorary Fellow of London Business School.
5. He has a lot of achievements under his belt. He received the
honour of 'The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year-India' in 2005. He
also received the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award from AIMA. He has
the honour of being the World Economic Forum's "Young Global Leader'. He received
'Entrepreneur of the Decade Award' from Bombay Management Association as well.
