Isro’s XPoSat to lift off today to study X-rays' sources :The Economic Times Jan 1,2024

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is set to begin the New Year with the launch of XPoSAT, or X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite, on Monday.

The satellite will seek to understand the sources of x-rays and study blackholes. The satellite is set for launch on board the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle from Sriharikota, and is only the second mission of its kind in the world after NASA's 2021 mission named Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer.
"XPoSat is India’s first dedicated polarimetry mission to study various dynamics of bright astronomical x-ray sources in extreme conditions," the space agency said on Sunday.

The spacecraft will carry two scientific payloads in a low earth orbit. The primary payload, POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays), will measure the polarimetry parameters (degree and angle of polarisation) in medium x-ray energy range of 8-30 keV photons of astronomical origin.

The other payload, XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing), will give spectroscopic information in the energy range of 0.8-15 keV.
