YOU MEAN THE HIDEOUS BUST AT MADEIRA AIRPORT?
Well, not according to its sculptor — Emanuel
Santos.
WHAT ABOUT SANTOS?
The unveiling of the statue led many on social
media to question the work's resemblance to the player. But Santos, 40, has
defended his work, as he believes the Real Madrid star is a fan of the statue.
According to Santos, Ronaldo, in fact, had asked him to make the portrait more
jovial, and had praised his efforts.
HOW DID SANTOS LAND UP WITH THIS JOB?
Santos was chosen to recreate the image of the
four-time Fifa player of the year which adorned the newly named Aeroporto
Cristiano Ronaldo in Funchal, Portugal, after offering his services to the
owner of the airport, where he was previously employed as a cleaner. Santos
spent three weeks creating the bust before it was cast in bronze.
JOB NOT VERY WELL DONE!
'Cristiano only asked for some change in the face's wrinkles.
He said it made him look older and asked for it to be thinned out a bit to make
it smoother and more jovial. But they gave it the go-ahead; they liked what
they saw,' Santos said.
BUT THE BUST WAS NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO THE REAL PERSON, WAS
IT?
Santos said he had to base his work off
photographs of Ronaldo as the striker was unable to model for him in person.
'It's impossible to please the Greeks and the Trojans, and even Jesus couldn't
please everyone... It's a matter of taste and not as simple as it seems,'
Santos said. 'The end result is never going to please everyone.'
WELL, HE HAS PLEASED MORE PEOPLE IN A WAY HE COULD NEVER HAVE
IMAGINED!
Well, like it or not, it's gonna be there. At
least this is better than the bizarre Michael Jackson artwork by artist Jeff
Koons or famous Czech artist David Cerny’s controversial purple middle finger
in the center of Prague’s Vltava River. They are sure to make you wonder why
they were ever made.
