4 people, including suspect, injured in New York explosion

New York emergency authorities were responding to reports of an explosion at New York's Port Authority, one of the city's busiest commuter hubs, during Monday morning's rush hour.

Local news channel WABC cited police officials as saying a possible pipe bomb detonated in a passageway below ground at Port Authority.

The New York Police Department said in its official Twitter feed that there was an explosion of unknown origin and that some subway train lines were being evacuated.

The Fire Department of New York says four people, including the suspect, have been hurt following the pipe bomb explosion near Port Authority bus terminal at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue near Times Square in New York City at the height of the morning rush hour.

Fire officials say none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

"A total of four injuries reported at the scene of an explosion at Port Authority. All injuries are non-life-threatening," the fire department said in a tweet.

According to New York Post, the suspect, who is in police custody, is a 27-year-old who lived in Brooklyn and is possibly of Bangladeshi origin.

According to several media reports, he had wires attached to him and a 5-inch metal pipe bomb and battery pack strapped to his midsection as he walked through the Manhattan transit hub.

The man partially detonated the device, which he was carrying under the right side of his jacket, prematurely inside the passageway to the A, C and E trains at 8th Avenue and W. 42ndStreet at around 7:40 a.m., New York Post reported quoting sources.
