Because it has become a norm for Indian Army & the Indian Government to use the “imported maal” over the “desi maal”. Fortunately, the “Make in India” campaign is changing this kind of attitude but it is still very much far away from removing this kind of mindset that the foreign products always perform better than the indigenous ones. The problem is that, the purchase of foreign products is largely influenced by the middlemen. Since, if the government decided to buy the foreign products, these deals will mainly be done through these middlemen which is obvious that this is inspired by the amount of money at play. If the government uses the indigenous product then it will be a catastrophic loss to these middlemen. Hence, these middlemen, usually with the help of the indian media who are nothing more than a bunch of TRP hungry morons, plant negative stories about how these indigenous weapons do not work or how these weapons fail to meet the so called expectations of the army.
- The army is to be blamed also, as it always changes its specifications at the last second. They do not even have clear idea of what do they want or expect the product to do. This weakness is again exploited by the middlemen who coax and brainwash the army into buying and placing orders for the foreign products. The army, as usual, accepts that the indigenous product is faulty when they were the ones who gave the original specifications. The story the Arjun MBT(Main Battle tank) is a perfect example of this. In short, the army changed its specifications at the last second and the DRDO had to work from scratch again. And when they gave it to the army for a retest, the army said that the upgraded tank was too heavy despite the fact that the original specifications were given by the army itself. Instead the army gave orders for the Russian T-90 tanks by comparing only the negative traits of the Arjun MBT, the comparison was manipulated(guess who?) & presented in such a way which showed the T-90 in a much better light than the Arjun MBT.
- However, many labs of DRDO are becoming more & more useless these days. Reason? It is just another governmental organisation which is plagued by lack of funds, internal corruption, etc. problems which are common to most government organisation. Ever wonder why ISRO never had these kind of problems? Because no country wants to share their important space technologies and thus ISRO has to do it by themselves. For this reason ISRO is more effective than DRDO and is thus praised more highly and given more recognition than we give to DRDO. If only the countries refused to sell their weapons to India I have no doubt that the DRDO will soon be able to manufacture world class weapons in no time. But again the countries know that, it is better to just feed the fisherman lest they learn to fish themselves and take rest of the fishes.
- This is how DRDO is portrayed by the Indian Media :-
- And how ISRO is portrayed by the Indian Media :-
