A stampede occured around 10 PM at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday (Feb 15.) The chaos was caused by a surge of passengers near platform 13 and 14, causing panic among passengers. The surge in passengers is believed to be linked to the upcoming Maha Kumbh travel. An ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh has been announced for families of the deceased in the New Delhi Railway Station stampede. Several leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and PM Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the incident.
According to Delhi Police, 18 people, including 14 women and 5 children, lost their lives in a tragic stampede that occurred around 10 pm yesterday at New Delhi Railway Station.The deceased were identified as Aaha Devi, 79, Pinky Devi, 41, Sheela Devi, 50, Vyom, 25, Poonam Devi, 40, Lalita Devi, 35, Suruchi, 11, Krishna Devi, 40, Vijay Sah, 15, Neeraj, 12, Shanti Devi, 40, Pooja Kumar, 8, Sangeeta Malik, Poonam both aged 34, Mamta Jha, 40, Riya Singh, 7, Baby Kumari, 24, and Manoj, 47, news agency ANI reported.
The chaos began when a sudden and unprecedented rush developed near platforms 13 and 14, causing panic among passengers. Some individuals fainted due to the overwhelming surge, triggering rumours of a stampede and further escalating the situation.
Overcrowding quickly spiraled out of control as multiple trains, including the Prayagraj Express at platform 14, and delays in the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani, added to the congestion. The station's capacity was severely strained, with more than 1,500 general tickets sold, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra.
While condoling the loss of lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared on X: 'Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede.'

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, 'Deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede that occurred at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is working to assist all those who have been affected by this tragic incident."
Railways forms 2-member probe panel
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity at the Railway Board, informed that a two-member high-level committee had been formed to investigate the matter and determine the cause of the stampede at New Delhi railway station.

My deepest condolences to the families of victims of this tragedy. Have spoken to Chief Secretary & Police Commissioner and asked them to address and redress the situation. CS has been asked to invoke DDMA measures & deploy relief personnel. All hospitals are in readiness to address related exigencies. Have instructed CS & CP to be at the site and take control of relief measures. I am constantly monitoring operations"
