Meet Bhumika Sharma, the first Indian woman to win the Miss World bodybuilding championship

The 21 year old Bhumika Sharma, after winning the Miss World Bodybuilding Championship held in Italy last month, is finally enjoying a much needed career break in her picturesque hometown of Dehradun. She scored the highest points in individual posing, body posing and fall category.

The euphoric winner is overwhelmed as she is now temporarily free to indulge in her passion for food. "I am gorging on Doon's chaat, I want to savour my favourite dishes before I go back to my strict diet," she says.

Bhumika is all praise for her birthplace Uttarakhand, saying the quality of food and natural climate made it easy for her to win the competition. She returned to her hometown within months after a trial attempt at joing a bodybuilding club at Delhi. Ever since she practiced at her family owned gym in Dehradun.

Inspite of her mother, Hansa Manral once being the chief coach of the Indian women's weightlifting team, her parents didn't see much of a future in her 'bodybuilding' pursuance. Bhumika's life took a turn when she met a gym instructor at Delhi- the man who encouraged her to not give up on body-building. It was with his help and enthusiasm, that her parents allowed her to follow her passion. Her rotuine is packed with weight lifting and running along with a rigorously strict diet.

Shattering stereotypes and bodyshaming notions about women so prevalent in today's culture, the winner said a strong and fit body helps in both build and boost confidence. Girls should be encouraged more to be physically fit, instead of going for flimsy, ill-portraying body types.

The champion body-builder acknowledges that people are not quite used to see a woman body-builder, and naturally can't resist from passing filty comments at a beefed-up physique of a girl. Bhumika said the best thing to do in those situations is to retain calm and ignore the comments as society can't change overnight.
