As an employee and a member of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), you don't have to wait for your employer to share the provident fund (PF) statement at the end of the year to know the balance. You can check the PF balance anytime from the comfort of your home or office using any one of these avenues - EPFO portal, app, SMS, or by giving a missed call.

Here are 4 ways you can check your PF balance.

I. Using EPFO portal

Instead of the unified portal , users will now be able to access their PF passbooks on a different website run by the EPFO . The unified portal can, however, still be used for transactional services like transfers.

To view the PF passbook on the portal you need to have your account tagged with your Universal Account Number (UAN). You can download or print the passbook from the website.

Step 1: The member passbook is available at www.epfindia.gov.in ..

Step 2: Click on 'For Employees' under 'Our Services'

Step 3: Click on 'Member Passbook' under 'Services'

It will take you to the page as below.

To access the passbook, make sure your UAN is activated by the employer. Remember, UAN is provided by the EPFO but it has to be verified and activated by your employer. So, if yours has already been activated, use it along with your password to log in and check your passbook balance.

The passbook facility is not available for members of establishments that are exempt under the EPF Scheme, 1952. If you still try to log in, you will get this message: "Passbook not available to this Member-id as this pertains to the exempted establishment (i.e. Trust). Requested to contact your employer."

II. By sending an SMS
If your UAN is registered with EPFO, you can get details of your latest contribution and the PF balance by sending an SMS to 7738299899. You need to send this message: EPFOHO UAN ENG. ENG is the first  three characters of the preferred language. So, if you want to receive the message in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR.

The facility is available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali. EPFO can only send details of members available with it. So, make sure your UAN is seeded with your bank account, Aadhaar and PAN, else ask your employer to seed them for you.

III. By giving a missed call
If you are already registered on the UAN portal, by giving a missed call on 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number will fetch you the details. Here, too, make sure your UAN is seeded with your bank account number, Aadhaar and PAN, else ask your employer to seed them for you.

IV. By using the EPFO app
The m-sewa app of EPFO can be downloaded from Google Play Store. Once the app is downloaded, click on 'Member' and then on 'Balance/passbook'. Thereafter, enter your UAN and registered mobile number.
