Study establishes that a good night’s sleep makes you more happy compared to a pay rise
Even a 50 percent hike in salary accounted for a negligible rise in well being when compared to good sleep

A good night's sleep plays a more important role in your wellbeing than a rise in salary. According to a research conducted by the Oxford Economics and the National Centre for Social Research, factors like sound sleep, good sex life, a secure job among other things play a more crucial role than high income in making a person happy.
The researchers, as per a report in the Independent, asked 8250 people around 60 questions regarding different aspects of their lives including their behavior and thoughts to rank people on the ‘Living Well Index’ i.e. a new well being measure.
The researchers found that an average person in the sample had an above average score of 62 out of 100. This meant that the bulk of the people surveyed were happy and ‘living well’. Around 20 percent of the people surveyed, topped the chart by scoring between 72 and 92 in hundred and were termed as the ‘living the best.’
The research showed that good sleep could make a difference of 3.8 points between a typical person’s score and that of those in the top 20 percent. On the contrary, even a 50 percent hike in salary accounted for only 0.5 points in the wellbeing score, which is only around a quarter of the points gained while having a good sleep. Health and wellbeing of relatives also mattered more than income.
The research thus gave a clear indication that personal health and emotional satisfaction played a more important role than wealth in the overall well being of a person.
