Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist, theatre person and noted film maker, is shot dead near her residence at Rajeshwari Nagar, Bangalore.

Gauri Lankesh was one of the most controversial journalists of Karnataka. She was convicted of two defamation cases recently. She was on the target of Right Wing organizations in Karnataka and Maharashtra. Unfortunately, she has been brutally killed in Bangalore on 5thSeptember, 2017. 

There is absolutely no problem in disagreeing with anyone’s personal views. Everyone is entitled to their views. A democratic society can’t sustain without respecting the right to freedom of expression. It also includes the right to disagree. But, that disagreement must never lead to violence. The case of Gauri Lankesh is the case of killing ethos of free and democratic society. Her assassination is a shame for all of us.

Gauri Lankesh came to limelight in 2008 when she published a story against BJP MP Prahlad Joshi and some other BJP leaders in a tabloid run by her. The story made many allegations without giving any proofs. Prahlad Joshi approached the Court and filed defamation suit against her. She was held guilty of defamation by the Court which sentenced her for six months and Rs. 10,000 fine. She had gotten anticipatory bail to evade arrest. In the story, Gauri had alleged that some BJP leaders have duped a Jeweler Rs. 1 lakh. The court summoned the jeweler who denied getting cheated. 

Gaur Lankesh had vehemently opposed the defamation suit. However, she bluntly refused to give any documentary proofs for allegations that she had leveled against BJP politicians. She had said that it is not proper for a journalist to reveal the identity of source.

In fact, all journalists try their best to conceal the identity of their sources. Gauri Lankesh was also doing the same.
