Padma Shri actor Tom Alter dies at 67

Veteran theatre, film and television actor Tom Alter has passed away. According to family sources, the 67-year-old actor had been battling skin cancer.

Indian actor of American descent, Alter was the son of American missionary parents. He was born in 1950 in Mussoorie.

Alter had been inspired by Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore’s superhit film ‘Aradhana’.

Alter was so impressed by their acting that he shun his comfortable career of a teacher to struggle to become an actor and could never stop being a die-hard Rajesh Khanna fan.

In an interview Alter stated that Rajesh Khanna was the reason he was in films, and that he still wanted to be Rajesh Khanna.

Filmography

The actor appeared in over 300 films which included Satyajit Ray's acclaimed movie "Shatranj Ke Khiladi" and "Junoon".

His first Hindi film to be released was Ramanand Sagar's Charas in 1976. His acting credits also include "Aashiqui", "Parinda", "Sardar Patel" and "Gandhi".Television shows

In television, Alter's work ranged from "Bharat Ek Khoj" to "Shaktimaan". He also worked in Bengali, Assamese and Telugu cinema.
